Matthews, 77-year-old Burley resident, died Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at the Cassia Regional Medical Center in Burley. He was born on July 27, 1927, in Liberty, Idaho, to Alonzo H. and Charlotte Hulme Matthews. He married Joan McLean on Aug. 20, 1953, in the Idaho Falls Temple. He was the father of six children, grandfather of 17, and great-grandfather of six. He was raised in Liberty, the fifth of seven children. He attended schools in Liberty and attended Idaho State University, graduating in 1954, with a degree in pharmacy. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Netherlands. Bill and Joan lived a year in Rockland while Bill completed his senior year at Idaho State and they then moved to Burley and purchased the Burley Rexall Drug Store. He retired in 1992. Bill has always been active in community affairs, including Idaho Pharmaceutical Association, serving as Magic Valley representative on the board of directors and one term as president. He has served on the board of directors of the Cassia Regional Medical Center, three years as president of the Cassia County Cancer Association, 14 years as a board member on the Snake River Council and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award. He was also a member of the Burley Kiwanis Club. Bill's greatest love of service was with his church associations and callings. He was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in various stake and ward callings including bishop, stake president and his personal favorite as stake patriarch. Bill is survived by five children, Paul W. (Linda) Matthews of Rupert, Richard M. Matthews of Burley, Susan Matthews Randall of Orem, Utah, John E. (Molly) Matthews of Lynnwood, Wash., and Mark M. Matthews of Franklin, Tenn.; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Al H. (Carol) Matthews of Green River, Wyo.; numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joan McLean Matthews; and a daughter, Donna Matthews. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2005, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Burley West Stake Center, 2420 Parke Ave., with Bishop R. Scott Bray officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Valley View Cemetery in Rockland. A visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Payne Mortuary, 221 W. Main St. in Burley. Friends may call from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the funeral on Saturday at the church. The family suggests memorials be given to the American Cancer Society. • Published Saturday, July 16, 2005
