Pearl was born on a cold winter day, Dec. 11, 1914. in Paris, Bear Lake County, Idaho. She was the last of 11 children born of hardy pioneer stock to John and Eliza Sutter Scheidegger, who had immigrated to this country from Switzerland. Pearl attended elementary school in Paris and graduated from the Fielding Academy. On July 20, 1937, she married Clifford Hardy Pearce of Paris. They had one son, C. Kelly Pearce. In 1941 the family moved to Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, where Mr. Pearce was employed as the station agent for the Union Pacific Railroad. There they led an idyllic “small town America” life. Mrs. Pearce assisted her husband in the bookkeeping duties of Station Agent and was employed as the clerk for the Lava Hot Springs Foundation, Utah Power and Light Company and as the city clerk of Lava Hot Springs. Following the death of her beloved husband, she moved to Mesa, Ariz., where she managed a mobile home park until her retirement. She then moved to Boise for a short period to be near her son and his family. Lava was always her home, and after two years in Boise, she returned to her home in Lava Hot Springs and again became active in the community as a senior citizen. Pearl loved being involved in community and service-oriented projects. She served as the chairperson of the local Senior Citizens organization. She performed many fundraising activities for the Senior Citizens, the Lava Lions Club, the 4-H program, March of Dimes and other community related projects. One of her proudest moments in life was to be honored by the residents of Lava Hot Springs with her selection as the “Grand Marshal” of the July 24, 2003, Founder’s Day Parade. As an amputee at age 84 and legally blind, Pearl was a constant inspiration to her family and the citizens of Lava Hot Springs as each day of her life she, with her walker, would make the two-block trek from her home to one of the local cafes to eat, secure an ice cream cone and then perform her daily duties of shopping, getting her mail and conversing with all those she met. Then she would walk the two blocks back to her home. She is survived by her son, Kelly, his wife, LaVonne, of Boise, two grandsons, Scott and David, and five greatgrandchildren. She was beloved and will be missed by all who knew her. In lieu of floral offerings. she would wish any donations be made to the Shriners’ Hospital for Children, where her first great-grandson has received such tender care from their doctors and staff.

Oreta Satterthwaite was born Jan. 22, 1916, in Garden City, Utah. She grew up on the Meadowville ranch during the summers, but spent her winters in Laketown so she could attend school without having to ride horseback from Meadowville each day. After graduating as valedictorian from North Rich High School, she attended Utah State Agricultural College, now Utah State University. During high school, she met her future husband, Earl Satterthwaite from Garden City. They were married in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple in 1934, and spent over 53 wonderful years together. Oreta has always been active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held many positions in various church organizations including Primary president, Relief Society counselor and president of the stake Mutual Association. She especially enjoyed her positions in the Primary organization. Later in life, she and her husband served an LDS mission to Rapid City, S.D. Oreta spent her life in the service of others. Countless hours of her life were devoted to providing meals to family and friends. For 14 years, patients at the Logan Regional Hospital were cheered by her warm care as a volunteer. Oreta’s children and grandchildren cherish many heirlooms such as wedding dresses and quilts she made. Even late in her life, struggling with poor eyesight, she continued to serve by calling elderly shut-ins and crocheting gifts for family. When not serving, Oreta enjoyed various activities around her Bear Lake Valley home. Many beautiful summer days were spent working and playing with family on their lakefront property. She loved to work in her numerous flower beds with beautiful results. In her youth, Oreta enjoyed dancing and having parties with friends. Later in life she loved nothing more than holding a new grandchild in her arms. Oreta is survived by her four daughters and their spouses, Gay Dean and Dennis Burdick of Montpelier, Idaho, Judy and Jim Morgan of Layton, Utah, Earlene and Douglas Rex of Salt Lake City and Oreta Sue and Joe Rice of Soda Springs, Idaho. She is also survived by one sister, Fern and Antone Hunter of St. George, Utah; as well as 45 grand- and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister, Harold, Leo, Farrell, James, Max and Margueritte; as well as her loving husband, Earl.
