Surnames: Teuscher, Jensen, Cook, Tadevich Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.idaho.counties.bearlake/2003/mb.ashx Message Board Post: SIDNEY J. TEUSCHER Idaho State Journal, 02/13/07 MONTPELIER - Sidney J. Teuscher, 90, passed away on Friday, February 9, 2007, in the Bear Lake Skilled Nursing Facility due to complication from a stroke. Sid was the 10th child of 12 born to Caroline Jensen and Karl Charles Teuscher on March 6, 1916, in Raymond, Idaho. Sid's marriage to Marie Cook blessed him with a son, Micheal Cook, and a daughter, Kay. A second marriage to Goldie Tadevich blessed him with Goldie's son, John Legerski, and a daughter, Nancy. Goldie and Sid were later sealed in the Logan, Utah temple. Life was hard for the Raymond, Idaho Teuscher family. Sid's father died when Sid was 3 1/2 years old. This death left Caroline with 12 children and no visible means for support. At the early age of 5 years old, Sid was farmed out to help a rancher for room and board. The rancher had Sid keep the cattle in the field of grass and out of the grain. The first few years of school were spent in Geneva, Idaho, living with Uncle Henry Teuscher as a working boarder. Sid returned to Montpelier, Idaho during his teen years and attended Montpelier High School. His learning was cut short, as he was needed to help support himself and help his mother. His life was one of hard work. His many jobs included cattle ranching, sheep herding, CCCs railroad (section gang, brakeman and conductor), bartender, ran a repair business (shoes, bikes, saddle and harness), help with rodeos (pick up and stunt man) and then 28 years in law enforcement (Montpelier Police deputy, Montpelier police chief, Custer County deputy sheriff and Custer County sheriff). Sid played football, wrestled and boxed. Boxing was his passion, and out of 25 formal boxing matches (he participated in other fights) he had: 16 knock outs, two decisions, two draws and five losses. In 1939, Sid took second place in the Pocatello Golden Glove Tournament. As an avid bodybuilder and strength enthusiast, Sid was often asked to demonstrate his strength, like breaking several strands of bailing wire by stretching, pulling a car with his teeth, having a car's front wheel roll up on his stomach, lifting 55 gallons of oil into a pick up, and one-arm lifting a 150-pound girl over his head. Sid liked fishing (Goldie got into fishing) and hunting. Sid loved horses. He captured Wyoming desert horses and trained them (all but one became good riding horses; the one became a rodeo bucking bronco because the horse was mean, and only Sid could ride him). Sid was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Goldie Teuscher, and his siblings, Charles Henry, Eugene Joseph, Viola Carrie, Louis Robert, Luella Lily, Alvin Christian, Maybell Lena, Woodruff Jensen, Roial J. and Vera Zell. He is survived by his brother, Vern; and his children, Michael (Karen), Kay (Ron) Gortcinsky, John Legerski, and Nancy Martin. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m. in the Montpelier Fourth Ward Chapel, where friends may visit with family that day from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. The interment will be in the Montpelier Cemetery, with services under the direction of Matthews Mortuary of Montpelier.

    1. [IDBEARLA] Emmett Guy Whitaker (1920-2007) Obituary
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Whitaker, Wallace, Randall Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.idaho.counties.bearlake/1999/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Idaho State Journal, 02/08/07 BOISE - Emmett Guy Whitaker, 86, died Sunday, February 4th, 2007, holding the hand he loved most, his wife, Alice's. Emmett was born on September 24, 1920, in a farm house in Downey, Idaho, to Guy T. Whitaker and Irva Wallace Whitaker. Irva died before Emmett's third birthday, and he was raised by his grandparents, Thomas and Mary Ann Whitaker, and a very loving family of uncles and aunts. His father remarried in 1927 to Melva Jensen, and they blessed him with siblings Cloe (who died at the age of 2), Melvin and Marquretta. Melvin and Marquretta were a loving, close part of Emmett's family for all of his life. He attended school in Downey and Montpelier, Idaho, where he graduated in 1938. He was very active in music and acting productions. He also earned a varsity letter in wrestling, boxing, track and basketball. In 1940, he attended Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho, where he met his future bride, Alice Randall. He moved to Ogden, Utah while he trained at Weber College Vocational School as an aircraft mechanic, and worked at Hill Field Army Air Base. Emmett and Alice were married on June 14, 1944, in the First Congregational Church in Pocatello, Idaho. They moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, to finish out that year, but then returned to Pocatello, where Emmett worked for the Naval Ordnance Plant, and Alice worked for Union Pacific Railroad. Emmett and Alice had two children, Steven and Joan. They spent many happy hours in surrounding hills camping, fishing, hiking and hunting together as a family. They traveled to a few national parks, the Pacific Ocean, Disneyland and many other interesting places. Emmett taught both of his children and all his grandchildren how to fish. Steven, in particular, remembers many hours of productive fishing with his dad. Joan remembers many times of him rescuing her hook from strange places. Emmett was a 50-year member of the Mount Kinport chapter of the Masonic Lodge No. 95 in Pocatello, Idaho. He progressed through the offices to become Worshipful Master in 1963. He was a member and a deacon in the Pocatello Congregational Church, and later a member of the Boise First Congregational, United Church of Christ. Emmett worked at ITEX Office Equipment in Pocatello and in 1969, transferred to Boise with ITEX. In 1973, tiring of traveling and being away from home much of the time, he went to work as head custodian of Meridian High School. Emmett enjoyed the kids and staff, and he was a great favorite with them. Emmett and Alice both retired in 1986, and continued their passion for camping and fishing and spending time in the mountains. They spent eight great summers as campground hosts for the U.S. Forest Service at Alturas Lake in the Stanley Basin area. They met many interesting people while hosting at Alturas, and many of these remained their family of friends. Family members and many friends have wonderful memories of camping, fishing, hiking, swimming, sitting around the campfire and playing boisterous games on the picnic table. Emmett loved being with his family, and he will remain their hero. He is described by one niece as "grace under pressure." He had a delightful sense of humor. His children will probably never know the real words to songs because they only heard the crazy words he sang. Grandchildren waited with delight to hear Grandpa's comments because they knew they would be treated to a bizarre twist of words and great puns. We all spent many happy hours around the kitchen table playing pinochle and other card games. His grandkids were not satisfied with a visit with Grandpa without a game of cards. Emmett and Joan would spend hours struggling with crossword puzzles. He had a command of the English language that allowed him to play loosely with many words, and kept us all laughing. Emmett brought stability and fun to everything he did - even joking with his last caregivers and then dying with dignity. He lingered long enough to hear once more the voice of his wife, Alice. He then left his weary body for a new and whole body in which he walks freely on streets of gold. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Alice Randall Whitaker; two children, a son, Steven Whitaker (wife, Cynthia), and a daughter, Joan Kauffman (husband, John). 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.idaho.counties.bearlake/1998/mb.ashx Message Board Post: We are celebrating the 80th Birthday of the Portia Club Clubhouse in Payette County this year and are researching how many other women's clubhouses are still in existence around the state. Women's clubhouses were buildings owned by women's groups to hold meetings, fund raisers, and participate in club activities. Many women's clubhouses were converted from homes and some were actually built with money raised by women's groups. Even if it is no longer in use we would like to add it to our list of clubhouses around the state. Please let us know if there are any women's clubhouses in Bear Lake County. Thank you for your help!

Surnames: Windley Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.idaho.counties.bearlake/1993/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Idaho State Journal, 01/31/07 MOSCOW - Paul Gordon Windley, 65, of Moscow, Idaho, passed away at home January 27, 2007, after a year-long battle with myelodysplastic syndrome and subsequent leukemia. Paul was born September 1, 1941, in Montpelier, Bear Lake County, Idaho, the first son of Don and Beth Windley. He grew up in Pocatello, Idaho, and graduated from Pocatello High School. After graduation, Paul served in the Armor Division of the Idaho National Guard. He attended Idaho State University, where he earned a bachelor of science in architecture degree. He also received a bachelor of architecture from the University of Colorado, a master of architecture and a doctor of architecture from the University of Michigan. As a graduate student he was invited to testify about his work before Frank Church's National Congressional Committee on Aging in Washington, D.C. Paul was a pioneer in the field of environmental gerontology. He spent much of his career showing the power of the designed (or "built") environment to harm as well as to help older adults. His research demonstrated how good architectural design could foster the independence and competence of older persons. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, with federal grant support, he led an interdisciplinary team of architects and psychologists through a nowclassic five-year study, examining how physical and social features of small towns affected the life quality of older rural Kansans. Paul was a prolific author and editor. He co-edited four internationally-acclaimed books in the field of gerontology. Over his career, he authored several chapters and dozens of research articles in primary journals in the field. He also served on numerous editorial boards. In recognition of his significant research and service contributions to international gerontology, in 1984 he was named a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America. His last publication, a chapter evaluating the status of environmental gerontology, appeared recently in (2006) in the esteemed "Handbook of the Psychology of Aging." Paul was a faculty member at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., for 20 years. He came to Moscow, Idaho in 1992 as dean of the College of Art and Architecture, returning to the faculty in 2001, and retiring in 2006. In addition to his academic service, Paul was active in his church responsibilities for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a mission for the LDS Church in Sweden from 1960-1963. He was bishop in three different wards in Manhattan, Kan., and Moscow, Idaho. Paul is survived by his mother and father, Don and Beth Windley of Boise, Idaho; his wife, Charla Ann Bell Windley of Moscow, Idaho; son, Jay, of Salt Lake City, Utah; daughter, Jill Fedigan (Brian) of Boise, Idaho; son, Tracey (Angela) of Moscow, Idaho; daughters, Annette and Dana of Moscow, Idaho.
