    1. [IAWEBSTE] I am a new subscriber
    2. Hi list! I am a new subscriber. I am from Wisconsin and am currently working on a branch that has taken me to Webster County, Iowa. Is anyone on this list related to the name Derouchey? Joseph Derouchey to be exact. He married Augustine O'Neil in Shullsburg, Lafayette County,WI. The family moved to Centralia, Dubuque County where Augustine died in 1878, Joseph remarried a woman named Mary? between 1878-1880. The Derouchey's left after 1880 for Fort Dodge area, Webster County, Iowa. Joseph died Nov 29, 1896 in Webster County. Will be glad to share what I have on Augustine O'Neil's background. I am trying to find if this Joseph is a brother to my husband's great grandfather, William Derocher. Sincerely, Rose DeRocher rkkd123@aol.com

    1. [IAWEBSTE] just a message from list admin
    2. Carol Foltz
    3. Hi folks! I've been busy lately and haven't had much time to sit down at my computer (I apologize), so I thought I should check in with my 2 lists. I will repeat information here since we have several new subscribers. When posting to a list, it is helpful to give details about what information you have and what you are looking for. For example: My Burrell family moved to Webster County just before the 1880 federal census (thank you, thank you, thank you!!!). One child was just 1 month old at the time of the census. Here is the list from the census: William Burrell Lydia Burrell David, son William, son Walter, son Bertha, daughter Blanche, daughter Now, the interesting part is that David, age 15 at the time of this census, was unknown to our family in modern times. This was the first time we knew he existed. Lydia was married 3 times, the first was apparently to a David Caylor. The information I have says that William and Lydia were married in 1868, which would indicate they could not have a 15-year-old son. I am inclined to think that David was Lydia's son by her first husband, in which case his name should be David Caylor. In the 1885 Iowa State Census, the household is listed as: Burrell, Liddia, 37 Taylor, David, 21 (misspelled Caylor?) Burrell, William 15 Burrell, Walter, 12 Burrell, Bertha, 9 Burrell, Blanche, 4 Burrell, Lulu, 1 Baxter, John, 35 Hagnan, Fred, 55 Hagnan, Minne, 58 Backard, Dora, 83 Looks like Lydia was running a boardinghouse. No mention of William Burrell, Sr. John Baxter is important because Lydia married him in 1895. As you can see, William Burrell Sr is not listed, although the youngest daughter, Lulu, is 1 year old. My mom was told by her grandmother, Augusta Burrell (married to Walter) that Lydia had been divorced once or twice. This was quite scandalous in those times. So, you can see there are a lot of questions I need to answer. My specific questions in this case are: Was Lydia married to David Caylor? (I haven't verified this yet.) Was the son David (1880 census) her son by David Caylor or by William Burrell? She married William Burrell in 1868, so it looks like David would have been about 3 by then. Is her son David (Caylor?) the same David listed as David Taylor in 1885 and as David Coyles in 1895 (where Lydia's son Walter was a member of his household)? What happened to William Burrell? He's not listed in the 1885 census. I welcome you all to post your own family information and questions. We can find out more by sharing information. Happy hunting! OK, that having been said, I will try to rectify this situation. Be warned, there's a lot of information here! :-) My ancestors were kind enough to move to Webster County in 1880, just prior to the Federal Census. In fact, they had a one-month old child at the time of the census. 1. [IAWEBSTE] How do you feel this first day of 2000
    2. Just thought I would pass this on. I received it from one of the lists that I am on. Tonia --------------- Forwarded Message: Subj: How do you feel this first day of 2000 Date: 1/1/00 6:34:41 AM Central Standard Time From: To: GEN-NEWBIE-L@rootsweb.com Just wanted to share something I found amusing and puts ones family history in a different perspective. Just in case you weren't feeling too old today, this will certainly change things. Each year the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the faculty a sense of the mindset of that years incoming freshmen. Here is this year's list: The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1982. They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan Era and probably did not know he had ever been shot. They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged. Black Monday 1987 is as significant to them as the Great Depression. There has been only one Pope. They were 11 when the Soviet Union broke apart and do not remember the Cold War. They have never feared a nuclear war. They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up. Tianamen Square means nothing to them. Their lifetime has always included AIDS. Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic. Atari predates them, as do vinyl albums. The expression "You sound like a broken record." means nothing to them. They have never owned a record player. They have likely never played Pac Man and have never heard of Ping-Pong. They may have never heard of an 8 track. The Compact Disc was introduced when they were 1 year old. As far as they know, stamps have always cost about 33 cents. They have always had an answering machine. Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels, nor have they seen a black-and-white TV. They have always had cable. There has always been VCRs, but they have no idea what BETA is. They cannot fathom not having a remote control. They were born the year that Walkmen were introduced by Sony. Roller-skating has always meant inline for them. Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show. They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans were cool. Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave. They have never seen Larry Bird play. They never took a swim and thought about Jaws. The Vietnam War is as ancient history to them as WWI, WWII and the Civil War. They have no idea that Americans were ever held hostage in Iran. They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are. They don't know who Mork was or where he was from. They never heard: Where's the beef?, Id walked a mile for a Camel, or de plane, de plane They do not care who shot J.R. and have no idea who J.R. is. The Titanic was found? They thought we always knew where it was. Michael Jackson has always been white. Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama are places, not groups. McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers. There has always been MTV. They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter. Do you feel old yet? pass this on to the other old fogies.

    2. Carol Foltz
    3. Dorothy: do you have a Burrell listed in that Honor Roll? I am not sure which one it was, my grandpa was one of 10 children. He was born in 1910, but at least one of his older brothers served. I think it has to be William Henry Burrell. I really need to get more organized! Anyway, would you mind looking him up for me? I remember looking at a book of WWII veterans during the Webster County Fair 2 years ago. The book was on display from the county historical society in the genealogy society's exhibit.
