    1. [IAWEBSTE] Roll Call--Eslick family
    2. Sue Grable
    3. Hi All, I have been working on the Eslick family for several years and have lots of information, but am always ready to find more and also to share. Our branch of the family is descended from Samuel and Nancy Pierce Eslick who came to Webster County in 1849 and from their daughter Sarah Lavina, who married Willard Allen 10 Oct 1870 in Elk Point. Sam and Nancy and several of their children moved to Elk Point, South Dakota in 1866 while other family members remain in Webster County to this day. I am still in South Dakota, though not near Elk Point. Jacqueline Davis Burt published a very good book on the Eslick-Pierce family in 1990 and I am wondering if she is still living in Webster County or if anyone out there could put me in touch with her. Sue Grable Highmore, South Dakota

    2. Doris HAGEDORN Holmes
    3. I am still looking for my grandparents LEE AUGUSTUS HAGEDORN married SARAH LEONA RUSSELL 1880? children Lee 1881, Will iam 1883, Lark 1887, Harry 1889, Sarah(Sadie)1891, Pearl 1894. and Daisy 1898 in FORT DODGE, WEBSTER COUNTY, IOWA What makes it so hard (besides the fact that I have just started on computer & genealogy this year) is Lee's parents brought him over from Germany sort of as a stow-a-way to avoid him having to fight in Prussian War at a very young age. I'm not sure if it was 12 yrs or not. Another thing that makes it hard is the mother died in 1898 and father about 2 yrs later and the children were sort of own their own. My Dad, Lark, made his way to Arkansas by train. Daisy was either raised by neighbors or adopted out. Harry is the other one that we know little about. Last we heard he was working on Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA. If anyone has any information on them I could sure use it, or if anyone has any suggestions about how to solve this let me know. I notice someone said something about a 1885 Iowa State census. I haven't been able to find one on internet yet. anyway Thanks for any help . Doris Hagedorn Holmes

    1. [IAWEBSTE] roll call
    2. Carol Foltz
    3. Hi again... Since we have so many new members, I would like to have a new roll call. A roll call is where you tell specifically what families/names you are researching in Webster County, Iowa. The purpose of the roll call is to share information in hopes you may find someone researching the same family and make things easier for both parties. I gave an example in my previous post. Your post doesn't have to be as chatty or long as mine was. It does help to be specific, however. Notice that I gave full names and mentioned specific years. "Looking for Smith in Webster County" will not help your search. Depending on what email program or web-based email you may be using, you can save your original message in outgoing mail or sent mail (or another similar name) and simply resend it when the next roll call is called, making changes if you wish. Happy hunting! Carol Foltz IAWEBSTE list admin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get Yahoo! Mail Free email you can access from anywhere! http://mail.yahoo.com/

    1. [IAWEBSTE] Burrells in Webster County
    2. Carol Foltz
    3. Hi folks! We have had several new subscribers lately, so I will repeat a (very long-sorry) post I sent before. When posting to a list, it is helpful to give details about what information you have and what you are looking for. For example: My Burrell family moved to Webster County just before the 1880 federal census (thank you, thank you, thank you!!!). One child was just 1 month old at the time of the census. Here is the list from the census: William Burrell Lydia Burrell David, son William, son Walter, son Bertha, daughter Blanche, daughter Now, the interesting part is that David, age 15 at the time of this census, was unknown to our family in modern times. This was the first time we knew he existed. Lydia was married 3 times, the first was apparently to a David Caylor. The information I have says that William and Lydia were married in 1868, which would indicate they could not have a 15-year-old son. I am inclined to think that David was Lydia's son by her first husband, in which case his name should be David Caylor. In the 1885 Iowa State Census, the household is listed as: Burrell, Liddia, 37 Taylor, David, 21 (misspelled Caylor?) Burrell, William 15 Burrell, Walter, 12 Burrell, Bertha, 9 Burrell, Blanche, 4 Burrell, Lulu, 1 Baxter, John, 35 Hagnan, Fred, 55 Hagnan, Minne, 58 Backard, Dora, 83 Looks like Lydia was running a boardinghouse. No mention of William Burrell, Sr. John Baxter is important because Lydia married him in 1895. As you can see, William Burrell Sr is not listed, although the youngest daughter, Lulu, is 1 year old. My mom was told by her grandmother, Augusta Burrell (married to Walter) that Lydia had been divorced once or twice. This was quite scandalous in those times. So, you can see there are a lot of questions I need to answer. My specific questions in this case are: Was Lydia married to David Caylor? (I haven't verified this yet.) Was the son David (1880 census) her son by David Caylor or by William Burrell? She married William Burrell in 1868, so it looks like David would have been about 3 by then. Is her son David (Caylor?) the same David listed as David Taylor in 1885 and as David Coyles in 1895 (where Lydia's son Walter was a member of his household)? What happened to William Burrell? He's not listed in the 1885 census. I welcome you all to post your own family information and questions. We can find out more by sharing information. Happy hunting!
