If your fellow had his paperwork done up properly before his death, he would have had no need for probate. He may have already transferred everything over to his wife. Also, sometimes there is no probate, but years later when the family sells the property and need to provide a clear title to the new buyers they have to go back in and proof relationships, etc to quiet the title. So I would encourage you to follow land records as well as probate. You will want to check every piece of property he owned, so a search of the grantor-grantee indices is important!
