I have a case of Mistaken Identity. My Emma Brower, who is the daughter of Dr. Jeremiah Brower and Nancy Weaver Brower of Lineville, had a daughter Pearl Daphne Wright on Dec. 15, 1880 in Wayne Co., IA Pearl is my GReat GRandmother. I am using her Family Bible as my guide in my research. She was raised in La Grande, Union Co. OR by her stepfather and mother. Her Mother's marriage there was in 1888, so Pearl would have been 8 yrs old at the time. She consistantly used her stepfather's name, MILLS, throughout her life, even her 1953 California Death certificate lists MILLS as her maiden name. Though she always freely acknowledged that her birth name was WRIGHT. It now appears from my research, that Pearl was most likely born outside of marriage, and that explains the use of another name. Pearl and her mother went to La Grande, Union Co. OR almost immediately after her birth in IA. Emma's mother Nancy W. Brower followed her daughter there in 1882, and died there in 1901. I hope I haven't shocked anyone with this news, but I have to face facts, and I might not EVER know the real father of Pearl. I have noted all the WRIGHT men living in Wayne Co. and especially in Lineville in the 1880 census. If anyone might know who the father is, please let me know. I believe this might turn into the Unsolved Mystery. Best regards to all researchers out there, Lillian Kathleen Martin
I can't help you concerning the father of your grandmother, but would suggest as you follow up on the Wright's in Wayne County, that you check the counties in all directions which will also include some counties to the south in Missouri. These can be real puzzles! Good luck! g2
