Morford, a leading and influential agriculturist of Richman Township, is a native of Mercer County, Pennsylvania, born within half a mile of Sharon, December 10, 1843, a son of John T. and Esther(Hazen)Morford, both natives of the Keystone State. When he was about nine years old his parents removed to Mercer County, Illinois, where he was reared and received his education. He remained at home on the farm of his father and grandfather until in August, 1862, when he enlisted in Company E, One Hundred and Second Illinois Infantry, under Colonel McMurtrie, and served with this heroic regiment until mustered out in June 1865. With his comrades he participated in the marches, campaigns, hardships and privations incident to a soldier's life, and played a gallant part in the battles of Resaca, Dalton, and the various engagements around Atlanta. June 22, 1864, he was wounded by a shell in front of the later place, and was sent to the hospital at Chattanooga, and from ther! e to Nashville, and thence back to Chattanooga, where he was in the convalescent camp during the winter of 1864-65. In March, 1865, he received orders to report at Alexandria, Virginia, and there embarking sailed down the coast, and around Cape Fear, rejoining his regiment at Goldsboro, North Carolina. After the surrender of General Joe Johnston the regiment went to Washington and participated in the grand review of the army. After his return from the service Mr. Morford engaged in farming, working by the month in Mercer County about a year. He was married March 26, 1868, to Miss Sophia Crosby, daughter of William P. and Elizabeth Crosby, natives of New York State, but later residents of Warren County, Illinois, where Mrs. Morford was born. Mr. and Mrs. Morford are the parents of eight children-William Kyle, deceased; Lycurgus Hazen; an infant that died; John Kinne; Esther, deceased; Roy Hiram, Carl Henry and Harry Jasper. Mr. Morford is a member and Quartermaster-Serge! ant of Wayne Post 137, G.A.R. In politics he is a Republican. He is a prominent and influential citizen of his township.
