    1. Widow Elizabeth Dillon (1816-1885)
    2. Perry Adams
    3. Wayne County Researchers: I am looking to connect my Elizabeth (Highley) Dillon with her proper parents and ancestors. Elizabeth was born in 1816 in VA, (County unknown,) and was living in Monroe County, OHio in 1840 census. Around 1843 she married William DILLON and in the 1850 Monroe County census she and William had three children: Abraham age 6, Henry age 4, and John age 3. About 1855 the family moved to Iowa where they purchased a farm near the Wayne and Decatur border. William died about 1875 and Elizabeth died 4 Sept 1885 in perhaps Wayne County. Does anyone know if there is an obituary file for Wayne county back in the 1880s that I might locate information on the widow Elizabeth Dillon? I would appreciate any help on locating information on her family. Thank you for your help. Perry Adams San Carlos, California

    3. This was on the Decatur rootsweb line. Thought you would enjoy it. Still fishing for data on TUTTLE, CLARK, MONCRIEF, REYNOLDS, TEATER. Bill Tuttle Montgomery, MN -----Original Message----- From: GenSearcher45@aol.com [mailto:GenSearcher45@aol.com] Sent: Friday, April 04, 2003 8:34 PM To: IADECATU-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [IADECATU] "The First Day Of Census" Hello all, My nephew sent me this and I wanted to share it with all of you. Regards, Carol ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The First Day Of Census" It was the first day of census, and all through the land each pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride, his book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there, toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face and wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table and she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked her of children. Yes, she had quite a few -- the oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride, and she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... the marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head and saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot" was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear, but she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such, they could read some ... and write some ... though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done so he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear, "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me as we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow as we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day that the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel and the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen -- the words they impart through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. --- Author unknown.

    3. My great-grandparents were James Washington and Mary Ashkettle Woods. Both James and Mary were born in Armstrong Co, PA. James dates are 1838 - 1901 and Mary's 1844 - 1924. They moved to the Big Springs area of southwestern Wayne County about 1867. They are buried at the cemetery there along with several of their children. Harry Edson, James McDowell, and Roy. Children Clarence Ellsworth "Lon" Woods, William L. Woods, and Samuel W. Woods, and James McDowell's widow Beatrice Swan Woods ended up in the Sedgwick Co Kansas area. I have been working on genealogy for over 30 years and have a great collection of material and photos. However, I just don't find anyone ever researching this family. I wonder if any of you might now be searching, and would like to share information. Gayle in Kansas gayle1@wheatstate.com
