When I visited the cemetery, I found several gravesites marked simply with a rounded, smooth, weathered rock. I suspect many who had limited resources accepted this as the best they could do to mark a grave. Yes, her husband, my greatgrandfather, was named Jacob Hoch. He migrated to Kansas about 3 or 4 years after she died and he remarried. The only date of death we have for Christina is referred to in a letter written by Mrs. Jacob F. Fichtner in 1921. She states Anna Christina died in the fall of 1879, 3 miles northeast of Brighton, Iowa. She was survived by 3 small boys, William Edward, born 6 Sep 1874, Arthur (my grandfather) born 22 Dec 1877, and George Albert born 21 Feb 1879. Mrs. Fichtner's father-in-law and mother-in-law were asked by Christina to care for the youngest, George Albert. They did and he took the Fichtner surname and used it the rest of his life. The older boys were cared for and lived with their uncle John Hoch in Walnut Township, Jefferson Co. Iowa (nearby) for a time until their father and his new wife could care for them.
