Hello all! I am looking to see if an ancestor of mine served in the Civil war between 1861 and 1865. His name is THOMAS TREPHENA CUSTER and he resided in WASHINGTON CO., IOWA when the war began. He was born in 1836, so that might help as to nailing down an age. I am assuming he served with the Union Army (north) but am not sure as to what the exact regiment was. He and his entire family moved to Oregon in the year 1865, but it is possible that he was in the Civil War before then. What is also interesting is that he died in 1866 of consumptio (TB) which I think may have stemmed from the Civil War, if he was serving.
