    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Bl.2ADI/161.2.1 Message Board Post: I saw a post you put on the rootsweb message board about Bohemians that came to Washington county, Iowa and am hoping that you can help me. My husbands great grandparents were Frank J. Liska born abt 1849 in Bohemia [he immigrated about 1857 and applied for citizenship in Jan. 1863 in Washington county] and Anna Novy [ her father was Martin Novy and he applied for citizenship at the same time as Frank Liska]. Frank died in 1895 leaving Anna with four children. My problem is the parents of Frank. I thought that his father was John Liska who is listed on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census for Jackson, Washington county, Iowa; but there is no Frank living with them and I can not find Frank until the 1880 census when he is living next door to John and some of his children. All of these families are listed on the census as being from Bohemia. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Joyce Grant Fesler in San Antonio, TX [my husband is Edwin Neil Fesler from Marengo, Iowa]

I would also like to get the exact date of death in 1920 for his wife Mary Dodds so perhaps I could get an obituary for her as well. In 1900 and 1910, they lived in Washington twp. Can anyone tell me how to get this from out of state? Is there a library or genealogical society that does this? Thank you for any help, Shirley

    3. Those photos are already posted on http://iowagravestones.org/ And I would recommend everyone in genealogy to post gravestone photos they have to this site. 1. IAGENWEB Boards
    2. njennings
    3. Those of you who have been subscribed for some time to this list are familiar with the Rootsweb Message Board for Washington County that is gatewayed to this list so you know when a new message has been posted. The IAGENWEB also has message boards which can also be gatewayed to the list. I had not been using the IaGenWeb boards. I thought perhaps it would be confusing to subscribers and I knew WCGS members sometimes answer queries for you. However, people that are familiar with the IAGENWEB boards can access their boards as well and post to these boards even though they don't show up as links on the main IaGenWeb pages. I know this sounds like Greek but it may make sense as we continue. I recently learned that a volunteer for Jefferson County has also been posting obituaries and documents, etc on the Washington County IaGenWeb boards. I have decided to subscribe them to this list as well, and use both boards but it will take a little while to get everything working. (I have a granddaughter graduating so I put cookie baking and other activities higher on the list than updating the index page on the IaGen website.) But you may get a few messages on this list before I get this all done. I will provide links on the website later so you can also post easily if you wish. If you find the newer IaGenWeb boards EASIER to use, please drop me a line. I can get a bit set in my ways but these lists are here to help you, not me. Even though the current obituaries posted on Washington County appear to be from Jefferson County, surnames from Brighton may be found in them since it is so close to the county line. If you want to post to or read the obituary board you can do so from http://iagenweb.org/boards/washington/obituaries Also a few document entries at: http://iagenweb.org/boards/washington/documents Norma Jennings Coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~iawashin http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialcgs http://iagenweb.org/civilwar http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jennings

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Bl.2ADI/545.2 Message Board Post: ARCHIE L. McMASTER FAMILY My grandfather, Wm. McMaster, immigrated from near Ulster, Ireland to the United States about the time of the potato famine in Ireland. He worked as a mule team driver on the Erie Canal for awhile. He met and married Emily Wheeler of Pennsylvania. Following their marriage, they moved west to a farm between Bedford and Mt. Ayr, Iowa. My father, Lee Frazer McMaster, was born at this location. The Wm. McMaster family, including my dad, moved from the farm in Iowa to Western, Saline County, Nebraska. My dad often told how he was given the job of herding a swarm of bees from Iowa to the farm in Nebraska. My maternal grandfather, Josiah Virgil Housel, lived in Iowa. He volunteered with an Iowa Unit and fought in the Civil War. He told me he believed in a strong federal union. He was wounded in the face and almost left for dead on the battlefield at Shiloh, Tennessee. However, he received treatment, regained his health, and later marched with Sherman through Georgia to the sea. Following the Civil War Granddad Housel married Harriet Romine. A few years later the Josiah Housels moved to a farm near David City, Butler County, Nebraska on a homestead. Granddad Housel told me about fording the Missouri River, as directed by a man from a hilltop on the west bank of the river, and Granddad was really pleased they made it without losing their belongings. My mother, Lillie Bell Housel, was born on this farm near David City. Mother, when just out of school, traveled to Western, Nebraska to assist her brother and sister-in-law in the care of their children. The brother, my uncle, was a school teacher in Western at the time. Dad successfully courted mother and they were married. Dad worked for a while on the railroad in Wymore, Nebraska. He then traveled to Valparaiso, Nebraska to find work on the Union Pacific Railroad. In traveling from Lincoln to West Lincoln he had to be taken in a rowboat since both Salt and Oak Creeks were in flood stage. The folks m! oved to Valparaiso where I was born October 23, 1907. My brother, Harlan Gayle, was about four and one-half years older and my sister, Genevieve Ione, was about two years younger than I. Our family lived in Valparaiso until about 1923 when my parents moved to Lincoln, Nebraska. I met and married Aural Jacquetta Rusho in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1935. "Jacquie" was born and reared in Loup County, Nebraska. I served as a Company Commander, Philippine Scouts, Philippine Division in World War II. Following the fall of Bataan I was interned by the Japanese as a prisoner of war for two years and ten months. Though not in the best of health when liberated, I was soon able to complete my education at the University of Nebraska. "Jacquie" and I returned to Saunders County in 1951 as I was assigned here as a Soil Conservationist with the Soil Conservation Service. "Jacquie" and I have three children (living), and now married. They are Patricia Rae, Robert Rusho, and Richard Lee. We also now have eight wonderful grandchildren. "Jacquie" and I are still going strong and enjoying the good life of Saunders County submitted by Archie L. McMaster
