They came to Iowa, first settling in Lousia Co. and then Washington Co., Iowa. His family moved to Lucas Co. when he was two. His parents were John W. and Margaret Buffington Layton. In his obituary it states the above information but doesn't give a birth date. The census of 1952 has his grandfather living in Crawford Co. in Washington Co. The 1860 census has all of the families living in Lucas Co. Can anyone out there help me with a look up on his birth, or does a book exist with births listed?

Here is a followup message to Carolyn Russell: Carolyn, Are you aware of David DARLING (b. 1789/1795) and Cathaine LAKE? They are likely an uncle and aunt (or perhaps brother) of Ezra Darwin, Almira and the other siblings. David appears to be the brother or son of Jabez DARLING. Based on the birthdates, etc., it is doubtful that David and Catharine are Ezra and Almira's grandfather and step-grandmother. At the very least, we know they are cloely related. In May 1871 he wrote a letter from Lime Creek Township, Washington County, Iowa requesting a pension for service during the War of 1812. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find his grave site. He lived in Seneca County, New York for years and I'm sure going to Iowa was quite a trip. He may have also visited Almira in Johnson County, Nebraska. Have you ever found a David DARLING grave? One DARLING researcher Sean Furniss found the letter. On his site he writes, "The fact that David shows up in Lime Creek Township, Washington Co., Iowa, in 1871, where Ezra Darling (married to Caroline Northrup) resided in 1860 and 1870 seems to indicate another possible family relationship." "Based upon the census and military records, it appears that David Darling was a resident of Lodi, Seneca Co., New York, from at least 1821 to 1860. Where he was during the 1870 census is not known at this time but he did not appear in the 1870 census records for Lodi, New York, Canton or Le Roy, Pennsylvania, or in Lime Creek, Iowa. In May 1871, he was residing in Lime Creek Township, Wassonville Post Office, Washington Co., Iowa." I will check the 1870 Johnson County, Nebraska census to see if he is there. http://members.aol.com/seanbarry/Darling1.html http://members.aol.com/seanbarry/Darling-Index.html http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/IAKEOKUK/1998-11/0911967877 Hope we can make all of these connections. With so many Ezra's and so forth it can certainly be confusing. Aaron
According to what I received in the mail the other day, DARLING and CORNELL 'family tradition' records that John Brown and his group may have introduced some diseases, I believe tuberculosis, to the area. Joseph CORNELL and some of his daughters died during the fall and winter of 1854. At first I thought it may have been a house fire, but apparently the cause was some infectious disease. Perhaps. I don't think research has gotten that far yet. This DARLING line seemed to occupy just about every county in western New York at some point during the first half of the 19th century. Here is a recent email message I sent to Carolyn Russell, cknuth@charter.net. She lives relatively close to me in Oregon on the beautful central coast. Carolyn, Thanks for sending me the material on Jabez and the family. I was wondering about so many deaths in 1854. Very interesting stuff. I had no idea John Brown was that far north. One of my distant cousins was a part of his group. Anytime you are in Salem, just let me know and we can get together. My grandmother and great-aunts (even my dad) remember Jerome Harvey DARLING. He died in 1955 I believe. According to what my grandmother had in her family genealogy records, Nacy's maiden name was ENGLISH. Of course, this could very well be wrong. For years Jabez and Nacy were recorded as Jalig (or Zalig) DARLING and Axie ENGLISH. I am glad someone had the research because it has been frustrating me for years. Aaron
If you have relatives buried in Eicher Cemetery, there is a good chance a photo of the gravestone is now on line. Ann White and her husband walked the entire cemetery recently and I just finished approving the last of 551 entries. This pushed us up and over the 2000 mark of Washington County gravestones photographed and on line.
