Thanks a lot for the info on Milton Hoskins. pat
I'm searching for any information on the HOSKINS family. The only information I have is that Milton Hoskins was born in 1840 in Washington Co., IA. He married Gilpha Gorton, but I have no information on her. They had 3 children, Richard Goron who was born in Jefferson Co., Mary Hoskins, and another daughter who married Harry Hill. I'm assuming this information is correct, but possibly not. Thanks in advance. Patricia Max
Happy New Year to my entire email list. I hope 2000 was great and 2001 is even better.
My STROHMs were in Washington Co., Grace Hill about the time the town was formed and wonder if there are any of the family left in that area. Christian C. STROHM and Charles Henry STROHM both had families that grew up there. Does anyone know of their whereabouts now? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
Linda, Undoubtedly the HAMILTONs in Washington co. are related to several in Louisa co. John HAMILTON, my gggrandfather, buried in Brown-Rice Cemetery in Louisa had brothers Samuel and Israel. After Samuel's death, most of his family moved to Indiana then to Washington co.IA. I don't know what happened to Israel's family. John, Samuel and Israel HAMILTON had two sisters...Jane HAMILTON married Samuel BELL and the other sister [not sure of her given name] married John MILLER. One of the MILLER sons, John, came to IA and married Ann PAISLEY, sister of Lydia PAISLEY w/o Andrew HAMILTON, sister Dorothy "Dolly" PAISLEY w/o William HAMILTON. Andrew & William were sons of John HAMILTON. I am new to this list and am looking for further information about my wife's ancestors who lived in Washington County. Harrison Riley(b ? d 1880) was married to Sarah Ann Settle(b ? d 1862) Their daughter Mary Riley(b around 1850 d. 1935) married twice. Marriage #1 was to a man with the surname Wooley. Marriage #2 was to Andrew Lischer of Louisa County. Harrison Riley, Sarah, some of a Wooley family and Mary (Riley) Wooley Lischer are all buried in Beauchamp Cemetery in Washington County. There also may be more of Harrison and Sarah's children there too. Can someone please tell me which Township Beauchamp Cemetery is located in? Most of the Censuses on microfilm are of relatively poor quality with severe fading of the writing.. If I can narrow my search to one Township my eyes will be able to better handle scanning for their names. The other specific information I'm looking for is the birth states of Harrison Riley and Sarah A. Settle. I believe these folks originate in Ohio and/or Virginia. Confirmation would tie them to some old 17th century colonial families. Any help sincerely appreciated. Eric Bergstrom Morgan Hill, California
Edith, at least most of the cemeteries in Washington Co. have be read. If I have the names, I do have acess to a few of the cemetery records. Do you know which cemetery they are buried in? Also what are the names you are looking for. I had some dear friends named Hamilton in Washington Co. I have nothing on Louisa county. Also, Dallas public library has mortuary records for at least 2 different funeral homes in Washington that have been helpful to me. I will probably not be going there until Christmas break. I will be glad to help you do a few lookups if I know what you are looking for. Linda
Have any of the cemeteries in Washington county been read; if so are they available? I am searching for the surname HAMILTON in both Washington and Louisa counties and VALENTINE in Washington county. Edith [email protected]
Pattee, My Dempsy Gatlin was born 1828 in Ill. married Elizabeth Jane Farrier 30 March 1838 (I believe this should be 1848 but have to check my notes) in Washington County Iowa died 27 Dec. 1885 in Washington County Iowa buried in WOODLAWN CEMETERY. WASHINGTON, IOWA Their children were all born in Washington County, Iowa and were named: Hilery (1849), Thomas J. (1850), George (1852), Melinda Elva (1855), Benjamin F. (1859), Francis Edward (1861), Martha Elnora (1866) Thomas J. married Elizabeth CORPMAN George married Mary E. Melinda married William Luckey Francis married Eva Martha married Joseph Shaw
Patty in CA, I have several Dempsey Gatlin's in the family so I'd be interested to compare notes some more. I don't recognize the Farrier name, but it is very possible that he was named for ancestors of the same name. Here's how it goes for us: Dempsey Gatlin Sr. born about 1750 Chowan River, NC Dempsey Jr. born about 1782/84 NC, died 1854 Washington Co., Iowa married Sarah SAUNDERS Hardy Allen Gatlin born 1810 TN married first Catharine Gates, 2nd Elizabeth Crawford born 1833 McCoupin Co., IL died 1893 Carthage, MO. Their daughter: Sarah Rebecca Gatlin born 1860 Greentop, MO married John L. LONG born 1852 Atamwa?, IA. Both of them died in Richmond, CA. There are several Dempsey's and Hardy's (Hardisty) in the family. Dempsey Sr.'s other children were named: Hardisty, Isaac, James, Edward, Rebecca and Jesse. Dempsey Jr's other children were named Sinia Lucinda, Nathan B., James, George W., Isaac, Dempsey and Sarah Ann. As for the Curry, I'd have to know Martha's parents names. Hi, My name is Jan and I live in Central Indiana. Living in Indiana is no connection with the Bells. I didn't move here until 1963. My brick wall is the parents of my great grandfather, William O. Bell tracked him down through records in Kansas. It took a long time to get there. I didn't even know his name until the last year. He was born October 17, 1856. Can't find him on the 1856 census. Since I don't know who his siblings were, I can't make a connection. He died in Sumner County, KS in 1926. I've tried to connect with other Bell's in Kansas that may have been his siblings. No luck there. All the death certificate gave was born in Iowa. Parents unknown. This is my last resort. I am contacting every county in Iowa. Maybe somewhere in the old records may be a mention of his birth, or of his being alive. I am looking for his parents, my gg grandparents, and hoping that someone in some county, will make me a very happy, grateful, gg granddaughter, and find my gg grandparents or at least where William O. Bell was born. All records I have seen that he signed were signed W O Bell. He may not have used his full name. By 1883, he was in Sumner County, Ks. Maybe there are some Bells out there that remained in Iowa and can make a connection. If anyone can help, I will be most grateful. Respectfully yours, Jan
Ancestor: Shapley F HUDSON Born VA 1805 Died Washington Co. IA 10 April 1862. Buried in Wassonville Cemetery. Operated a mill on the English River not very far from the cemetery. One son, William, died in the Civil War, and enlisted from there. Horatio McDowell, father-in-law to one of Shapley's daughters, is also buried there..
Linda, Thank you for the information. It sure helps to know someone who lives in the area and who knows the little details! I'll check out Johnson county, too. By the way, do you know who to contact about records for the Riverside Cemetery that is located near Riverside? I haven't been able to come up with an address over the internet. Carol
Carol, Riverside, Washington, Iowa is in the far Northeast corner of the county on hwy 218. Population 824 on the 1990 census. If I remember right, there is a cemetery just over the Johnson County line. You might also check Johnson County for death records. If she were seriously ill she may have been taken to University Hospital in Iowa City. I have several of my family that died there, even though they lived in Washington County.
