PLEASE LET KNOW IF THE WELLMAN CENTENNIAL BOOK IS FOR FOR SALE AS I HAVE MANY RELATIVES IN THE BOOK. PAT
I just received copies from the Wellman Centennial book from Jeff, a fellow subscriber. I just realized while looking over the pages that I should have asked for any Foster and Boal entries as well. I can send money for anyone's time and effort. Our family has a reunion in mid-July and I am hoping to get as much information as possible by then. I greatly appreciate anyone's assistance. Please let me know if you are willing and able to do this. Is the book still available for purchase? Thanks very much. >From The Evening Journal, January 26 1916, Washington, Iowa DENNIS BROWN IS DEAD AT AGE OF 85 Iowa Pioneer Settler Answers Call Yesterday - Funeral Thursday Dennis Brown, a resident of the Highland park section of town, died at 8 o'clock yesterday evening at his home, aged 85 years. For several years his state of health had been frail, owing to his advanced years, and he suffered injuries in a fall last Thursday at his home from which he was not permitted to recover, owing to his weakened condition. By accident he stepped into a cellar way, mistaking the door into the cellar for one entering the house, and received a severe fall, sustaining numerous bruises and receiving a serious physical shock. The funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 at the Presbyterian church, of which Mr. Brown was a member. He was a splendid type of manhood, unassuning, industrious and sincere and had many friends. Mr. Brown was born near Cincinnati, Ohio, October 24, 1830. He was a son of Joseph and Diantha Brown and came with his parents to Louisa county, Iowa, in 1836, being among the earliest settlers of that county. For many years he lived near Cairo in Louisa county and came to Washington to make his home about twenty years ago. Since leaving the farm he followed the trade of tiling, and installed much of the tile on farms in this and Louisa counties. He was married first to Eliza Turner, who died in July, 1903. In June, 1906, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Thompson, who survives him. He has one sister, Mrs. Eliza Beard of Glendale, Arizona. He came of a long lived family, his father's demise occuring at the age of 92 years. Mr. Brown was an uncle of Mrs. G. W. Dodder of Washington and a cousin of Millard Patton of Columbus Junction. He had two other nieces, one in California and one in Arizona. Mr. Brown was a veteran of the civil war, having enlisted in Louisa county at the age of 31 in Company K, Eighth Iowa Infantry. He was taken prisoner at the battle of Shiloh, April 6, 1862. He took part in other engagements and had an enviable military career.
>From someone else who has been counting, the Board Administrators have had about 1400 messages in the last 48 hours. But at this point who is counting?? Anyone want my job. <G> It is slowing down with newly adopted procedures today so there is hope. Norma
Okay, folks, I just checked and I believe our new Data Boards are up and running on both Louisa and Washington Counties. If you are used to using the GenConnect Boards, you can still use those links for the time being as they will automatically forward to the new system. It doesn't matter which link you click on they will all go to the URL below. I will get the web pages updated as soon as possible. This will eventually be three boards in one, combining GenConnect, MyFamily.com and "can't remember the 3rd right now". The Board Administrators have been receiving several hundred postings a day so we are a bit zombied at the moment. So, if I goofed in these instructions we will try again later. You can visit the pages without a signin and password, but if you wish to post, you will need to go to the http://boards.ancestry.com first to get registered. All of the Boards, Bible, Bios, Deeds, Obituaries, and Wills are in the same database but when you post, you go to the pull down menu and click on the category you want to store it in. This pull down box is under the submission box where you enter your data. By the same token, if you wish to search a particular category, you need to click the radio button for This Board and not All boards and then enter the name of the category in the search box. There is also a date feature. When I currently pull up an obituary page, I get the obituaries for June 2001, if I click next I go to May 2001. It may take awhile to get used to but it will be more stable and much better once we all get used to it and the enhancements are in place. If you wish to go directly to the new Boards, you can use this URL to view them. http://boards.ancestry.com You will find our pages under the Localities category. You can visit the pages without a signin and password, but if you wish to post, you will need to go to the Ancestry site first to get registered. To do this click on the blue link in the upper right hand corner of the above URL. There is no charge for these free boards. Click on United States, then States, then Counties, and then the County you want to visit. A lot of clicks but I will try to get a shortcut to it eventually. I would like for you to see the whole enchilada at this stage to familiarize yourself with it. Not all of the administrators have their sites in working order yet and there are still bugs in the system but I think we are okay on Washington and Louisa County for now. If you encounter any problems, please let me know. I will try to develop some on site help pages when I understand everything myself. I think you will love the new system once you get over the change panic. You will have access to more messages and information in the end. Norma
FYI: Rootsweb and Ancestry.com are in the process of merging the two message boards MyFamily.com and GenConnect. As with any new system, there are always bugs to work out and yes, some training of the Board Administrators and possibly even users. As with any new venture, there are a deluge of unproductive e-mails bombarding the programmers from folks that don't understand the system and like a bunch of lemmings run for the sea. I am going to ask you to hold any posts you might be contemplating on the GenConnect or the newly created Boards for a few days until the furor dies down. The system should be more efficient and will probably be welcomed once things settle down. You will not be able to access the GenConnect Boards in the future but those messages still will be available in the new system when things are finished. There may be some server downtime as they remedy any problems that have been more than amply sent their way. You can still post on this mailing list without any interruptions of service or limited usage. I will try to give you further instructions and get the appropriate links on the web pages when I am more sure of my own competency in it. I think it will be a good system but many people resist change and create all the problems they can while they try to derail the project. Please hang in there with us and we'll get you back on track as soon as possible. Norma Jennings Listowner of Washington and Louisa

Linda, I am a direct descendant of Samuel E. Nelson's brother, Henry Harrison Nelson, who lived in Richland (Keokuk Iowa. Their mother, Dorcas, also lived in the area. They had several brothers and sisters who migrated all over the U.S., mostly in the south. No others in Iowa that I know of, and I don't think anyone in H.H. Nelson's line is still in Keokuk County. A. Overfelt Passes Sunday RIVERSIDE, Nov. 20 -- Charles Overfelt, for nearly 60 years a prominent and respected citizen of this place, died at 8 o'clock Sunday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. Subsequently the home was established in Iowa City and later he came to Riverside before the beginning of the Civil war. In July 1861 he enlisted in Co. G Sixth Iowa Infantry in which company he served six months, being discharged at that time on account of ill health. On August 27th 1862 he was united in marriage to Miss Nora Williams. The new home was made on a farm three miles southeast of Riverside. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Overfelt, three dying in infancy and a son Lester passed away two years ago in Colorado. The Overfelt family moved to Riverside in 1898 where they lived until a few years ago, when the failing health of Mrs. Overfelt compelled her to give up housekeeping and make their home with their daughter.
