This is what I have for John Nicola. I have that he married first Rachel Mathews who was born 18 Oct 1828 in Preston Co. WV to Joseph and Elizabeth (Cress) Mathews. She came to IA in 1845 and married in Washington Co. on 14 Aug 1856. Some information I have says that Rachel was married first to a Shahan. She died in Washington County on 15 March 1860. John then married Rachel's niece, Nancy Mathews, daughter of William S.and Cassandra (Leach) Mathews. Cassandra was Rachel's sister. Nancy was b. 1840 in Iowa. Nancy married John Nicola in Washington County, 17 May 1860 or June, 1860 in Pilot Grove, Washington Co. IA. I do not have a death date for Nancy.

In regard to marriages in Washington County, the Washington County Genealogical Society has computer printouts of the marriages in their Library upstairs in the public library. If you send a query to the Genealogical Society, their corresponding secretary may look up information in that library and advise what they know, but please don't expect them to go to the courthouse to do research for marriage applications, etc. If you can possibly make a trip to the library itself, I advise you to do so as they have one of the best genealogical library collections that you will find in the State of Iowa on local families and the history of Washington County. The Washington County Genealogical Society also publishes marriage records in its newsletter. This newsletter is sent to all members. I believe the membership is $8 a year but I could be wrong, I need to renew myself. I usually just send a donation and tell them to keep the newsletter coming. Norma Jennings
Looking for someone to look for a few marriages for me in Washington county. From about 1855 to 1870. Surname of McCampbell........Eliza, Sarah,Mary,Polila,William,David L., and Sophia G. Dear Don, Can you tell me if you were allowed to look at the Iowa marriages? I have a marriage for some great great grandparents in 1865 in Washington Co., have written the clerk and the genealogy society to inquire as to if there are marriage applications for that time period. (I have a copy of the marriage) The clerk referred me to the society and the society sent me some information on Harpers in the county but did not answer my question. I have asked them twice and did not receive a direct response to my question. Gayle Oklahoma City
Dear Brenda, I have just returned from two days in Washington and Henry Counties, Iowa. Sorry I did not have your request a week earlier. However, It will be VERY helpful to whatever kind soul tries to assist you if you could designate a time frame. The record books in Washington County are in a small back room and, often, a ladder is needed to retrieve ( and return) them. For the record,I found the staff in the Recorder's Office of Washington County courteous and those in Henry County helpful. I made some fair progress with my CUSHMAN and WALKER queries in that area. Peace be with you and yours, Don Love

Hello all! I am looking to see if an ancestor of mine served in the Civil war between 1861 and 1865. His name is THOMAS TREPHENA CUSTER and he resided in WASHINGTON CO., IOWA when the war began. He was born in 1836, so that might help as to nailing down an age. I am assuming he served with the Union Army (north) but am not sure as to what the exact regiment was. He and his entire family moved to Oregon in the year 1865, but it is possible that he was in the Civil War before then. What is also interesting is that he died in 1866 of consumptio (TB) which I think may have stemmed from the Civil War, if he was serving. I'd like to know if and when this man served in the Civil War. It may explain his death at the age of 30. Can you help? Thanks, Justin Pike --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Kathy, the best place to do research in Washington County is in the Washington County Genealogical Society's Library located upstairs in the Public Library. It is next door to the Jones Funeral Home. They have an extensive collection of transcribed court records, cemetery records, tax lists, family history books and CDs.
Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew how far back the land records went at the Washington County Court House. Would they go back to the first settler? I was wondering if there might be a record of land purchased as far back as 1864. If anyone knows the answer please email me. I would also like the address of the Court House or the Genealogical Society to request for the help in obtaining copies of those records. Thanks so much. Jene
