Posted on: Warren County, Ia Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/Warren/1188 Surname: Marion Francis Baldwin, Anna Jane Mote Baldwin, Elijah Baldwin, Parmelia Anderson Baldwin ------------------------- Hi, I am looking for any descendents of my Baldwin and Mote families. My GG grandparents Marion Francis Baldwin and Anna Jane Mote lived in Palmyra, Iowa at the time of their deaths in 1925 and 1927. Marion was born in Palmyra, Anna in Union County Ohio, then from Darke County Ohio. Anna was the daughter of Joseph Mote and Alzina Harriman. I am searching for information to varify stories that Joseph was blind. I would like to know the details, such as was he blind from birth, was there an accident, or possibly a medical problem. Elijah Baldwin and Parmelia Anderson were the parents of Marion. Elijah was from somewhere in Ohio and Parmelia was from somewhere in North Carolina before they moving to Iowa. They were married in Mahaska, Iowa in 1848 and Marion was born in 1849. I know nothing about Parmelia's family. Thanks to a terrific person in Iowa I am getting much information on these people. Now I am hoping to find someone with direct lines to them. Other family names from Warren County are; Chambers, Hurlbut, Beck, White and others. I don't know how long the White's lived in Warren County, my Mother was born in Indianola. Her parents were Foster E. White and Vera Engelhardt, his parents were Edward White and Leafie Bachtell. I have all my Engelhardt information but would be thrilled to talk to family members. These are the names I am working on at the time. Thanks Please contact me at either OurFamilyLinks@aol.com or BarbnFamily@aol.com

Posted on: Warren County, Ia Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/Warren/1183 Surname: ------------------------- I think you may already have this information but I will pass it along again. From the Warren County History. I still own some of James Dowell's land. He was my great grandfather. James W. Dowell, was born in Kentucky, of Dutch and Welsh ancestry, and died in 1903, at the ripe old age of eighty-one years. From his native state he removed to Montgomery county, Indiana, with his parents when thirteen years of age, making that place his home for ten years. It was then, in 1845, that he came to Warren county, Iowa, and cast his lot with the pioneers of this region. In early life he had worked as a mechanic, but later turned his attention to farming and on coming to this county he entered land in Greenfield township, to the improvement and cultivation- of which he devoted his energies until his retirement from active labor in 1887, becoming a resident of Des Moines at that time. There he made his home until called to his final rest. Twice he enlisted for service in the Civil war but failed to pass muster. He was first an old-line Whig but became a republican on the birth of that party. He was active in church work as a member of the Baptist denomination and led an upright Christian life. His wife, who bore the maiden name of Martha Reese, was born in Vermilion county, Illinois, in 1827, and is of Irish and English descent. She is still living at the age of eighty-one years, her mental and physical faculties intact. By birthright she is a Quaker but for many years she has held membership in the Baptist church.
Hi, My name is Jan and I live in Central Indiana. Living in Indiana is no connection with the Bells. I didn't move here until 1963. My brick wall is the parents of my great grandfather, William O. Bell tracked him down through records in Kansas. It took a long time to get there. I didn't even know his name until the last year. He was born October 17, 1856. Can't find him on the 1856 census. Since I don't know who his siblings were, I can't make a connection. He died in Sumner County, KS in 1926. I've tried to connect with other Bell's in Kansas that may have been his siblings. No luck there. All the death certificate gave was born in Iowa. Parents unknown. This is my last resort. I am contacting every county in Iowa. Maybe somewhere in the old records may be a mention of his birth, or of his being alive. I am looking for his parents, my gg grandparents, and hoping that someone in some county, will make me a very happy, grateful, gg granddaughter, and find my gg grandparents or at least where William O. Bell was born. All records I have seen that he signed were signed W O Bell. He may not have used his full name. By 1883, he was in Sumner County, Ks. Maybe there are some Bells out there that remained in Iowa and can make a connection. If anyone can help, I will be most grateful. Respectfully yours, Jan

Hello friends, I am in search of information for William Runciman and his family. He came to Allen Township, Warren County, Iowa in the early 1850s. William and his family are buried in the Scotch Ridge Cemetery, Warren County, Iowa. William's wife was Elizabeth Hastie, whom he met while traveling to America from Scotland. She had several relatives settle in Warren County also. William's sister Mary Runciman Wood and her husband John Wood came with him and they too settled in Allen Township. William's mother, Mary Redpath Runciman, is supposedly one of the first to be buried at Scotch Ridge Cemetery. Any information on these early Warren County immigrants would be appreciated. Also, if anyone has access to a book, "History of Warren County" which was first published in 1879 and then republished by Unigraphics, Evansville, Ind. in 1979, I would be interested in the section on Allen Township and the Runciman, Wood, Hastie biographies it is supposed to have. Thnak you, Jere Runciman

Hi! I was a little late in reading my email and was shocked when I read this. I did research in Warren County, Iowa last spring. I went to the recorder's office in the courthouse and was given free reign in the back with the books. This was my first trip there. The staff was very friendly, but extremely busy. There were at least 3 other genealogists in the back room with me. I stayed from the opening hour until closing hour with no problems. I looked up births, deaths, and marriages as well as land records. Could the problem have been that the staff was so busy they just referred you to the State of Iowa without examining your request more closely? I personnally have been ignored or redirected by more county personnel than I can count. I find that if I do the research myself; they are more inclined to show me the way. I live several states away from where I need research so it going to take me forever to get it all done this way, but at least I know it's accurate info. The marriage record you are seeking would probably be found on microfilm through a Family History Center for about $3.25 per roll (you get to view the roll for several weeks before they send it back). I show the following from them for Warren Co., IA: Marriage register v.B-C 1867-1878 roll #1011011 A lot of the early Warren Co., IA records (I have yet to find one they don't have) are microfilmed by the Church of LDS. I currently have access to the early probate records indexed by name and 2 rolls of early land deeds if anyone needs a lookup. I will be going back to Warren Co., IA this fall for another research trip, too. Jennie Williams (and I am just a girlfriend!!!-not even a spouse) ----- Original Message ----- From: MacsLewin@aol.com To: IAWARREN-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, March 26, 2000 10:52 AM Subject: Access to early family records denied to spouses in Warren County Dear Warren Co. List members, I'm stunned!!!!! Warren County, Iowa will not release a record of the 15 Apr 1875 marriage of Sylvester and Martha E. McConnell Willis, even though the event took place over 125 years ago. I was told, in a less than charming manner, that these records can reviewed and possibly released to direct line descendants only. So as a sponse, I don't qualify!!!!!!!! They won't tell me if they even have the record. Evidently, there is no guarantee. But they will be delighted to tell me if they have the record if my husband will fill out the form, sign it, promise his first born and send $10.00. Unbelieveable. Just what malice a person could perform with such a record, I'm sure I don't know!!!!!!! I presume that also means probate records are off limits as well. How tacky!!!!!! I have never run into a situation like this. I'm not sure I want to send $10.00 for a "maybe". I think it's highway robbery to charge a research fee for a $.25 uncertified xerox copy. What research? I provided the date, place and participants. All I wanted was a confirming marriage document for my children's ggg grandparents. Is this some kind of crime? Is this kind of discrimination statewide or just Warren County? Have you had this happen in your research? Can anyone explain this? The form the Warren County Recorder sent for us to fill out and return was for the State of Iowa. The State doesn't have records that old. What is the problem in Warren County? My husband's Willis family were pioneers in Warren County, Iowa specifically White Breast Township. If the County Recorder is in error, you need to know what is happening to the visitors of the county. For now, I will do my research in Missouri where I am warmly welcomed as a spouse and legitimate family researcher. Charlotte Lewin macslewin@aol.com
Oh dear... and I was just getting ready to order to some marriage and death records... Makes one wonder, but guess you'll just have to throw a pen in hubby's hand and hope they believe he is 'really, truly who he says he is.' Judy Johnson
