I don't think I have ever worked on a family with more contradictory information. First, the 1930 Federal Census for Ottumwa,Center township, Wapello county, Iowa: Harper, Thomas J., head, aged 72 born Missouri, parents born Tennesee Harper, Mary E., wife, aged 59, born Missouri, father born Missouri, mother born Indiana Wise, Niles E., son-in-law, aged 37, born Iowa Wise, Sarah, dau, aged 35 born Iowa Notes: The census indicates that Thomas was married at age 32 and Mary at age 19, so that would mean they were married abt 1890. Nile indicates he was married at age 25 and Sarah at 23 so they would have been married abt 1918. 1920 Federal census for Wapello county: I can't find the Harper family in the 1920 census, however, I do find: Ottumwa, Center township, Wapello county, Iowa Wise, E.B. head aged 59, born New Hampshire, parents born Maine Wise, Matilda, wife, aged 58, born Ohio, father born Maryland, mother born Ohio Wise, Nile, son, aged 28, born Iowa Wise, Sara, dau, aged 24, born Iowa Notes: Edward B. Wise married Matilda Rutter on 24 Dec 1881 in Wapello county. Harper married Mary Ellen Thomas on 12 March 1904 by J.A. Ballard, Justice of the Peace Charles Harper married Jennie Thomas on 5 July 1912. Her parents were John Thomas and Mary Ogle. Bessie May Harper married Charles Orman in 1917 Clarence Samuel Harper married Elizabeth Duell Chamberlain - no dates. >From Wapello county death records: Thomas J. Harper died either on 11 Apr 1933 or 11 May 1933 depending on which record you look at. He is buried in the Rose Lawn section of Memorial Lawn cemetery in Ottumwa Mary E. Thomas died on 17 Feb 1938, most likely in Council Bluffs, Iowa (based on the funeral home that handled the arrangements. She is buried with Thomas in Ottumwa.
