    3. I would like to obtain the obituary of Edward Sloan. My father's eldest brother was Edward H. Sloan, born in Chicago in 1904. Died Bladensburg, Wapello, Iowa near Ottumwa, Iowa in July 1978. The Social Security Death Index lists him only as E. Sloan Social Security Number 356-03-6688, Issuing State, Illinois, issued Before 1951. He served in the US Marines and was in the Invasion of Iwo Jima in the 5th Service Battalion. He was Captain Edward H. Sloan. After the war, he came back and visited his family only one time in 1946, and then disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again. We had no idea what happened to him or whether he was dead or alive. A few years ago I discovered him in the Social Security Death Index. He had died in July, 1978. I called Ottumwa, Iowa, spoke to a neighbor and confirmed that that was really him. I would like to find out if he was married and if he had any children because they would be my cousins. Naturally I am wondering why he would drop out of his family in this way. Do you think you could find out anything about this? Sam Sloan

    3. I need to thank Dee Hall for obtaining the following Obituary from the Ottumwa Courier for June 1978. Deaths Edward Howard Sloan, 74, of 2657 Kenwood died at 4:30 p.m. June 7 at Ottumwa Hospital. He was born June 20, 1903 in Chicago. He came to Ottumwa and operated a distributing company from 1946 until he joined Credit Bureau of Ottumwa in 1953. He was manager of the credit bureau for 25 years. He enlarged it by adding a collection department and also became active in state credit association work. He attended Northwestern University and was a Marine Corps officer in World War II when he spent four years in the South Pacific and taking part in several major campaigns, including the assault on Iwo Jima. In Ottumwa he helped organize an active Marine reserve unit, heading it for several years and retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He was also a member of the Ottumwa Airport Commission, Rotary Club, American Legion, Elks and First Presbyterian Church, where he had served as an elder. His first wife, Miriam Whitehill, died in 1956. Survivors: His wife, Matilda, a son, Dixon of Tucson, Ariz., a daughter, Mrs. Gail Bates of Ottumwa, step-sons Stanley A. Haw of Billings, Mont., Edward H. Haw of Rochester, Minn. and a stepdaughter Mrs. Joanna Rogers of Rochester, Minn. Services: 11:00 AM Saturday at First United Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Louis Wollenberg of First United Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial: Ottumwa Cemetery. Family visitation at Jay Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 PM Friday. Memorial: In his name to Ottumwa Hospital. NOTE: The date of birth above is an error. His actual birth date was June 20, 1904. It appears that his two children were both adopted, so they are not my biological cousins.
