I checked through some information I have and could not find a reference to a ferry owned by a person named MARTIN. That is, perhaps, not unusual. At one time there were as many as four ferries running on the Des Moines River between Ottumwa and what was then Port Richmond (later part of South Ottumwa and now simply part of the city of Ottumwa). It seems that the ferry locations were later the same places where bridges were constructed. There was a ferry in the general area of the Vine Street bridge, the Market Street bridge, and a ferry went to Turkey Island. The ferries were the only means to cross the river until the 1870s. However the first totally permanent bridge was not constructed until 1892. The earliest ferry owner that I can find was Tay Sinnamon in 1852, however there was more than likely someone prior to that. The Richmond ferry went from Port Richmond to Central Addition, then to Wapello and Main streets. The Richmond ferry was purchased by John Overman and is still known to many as the Overman Ferry. The ferry by Turkey Island was owned by a man named Ford. I don't know much else about him. Bill Hansen Ottumwa, Iowa
Thank you Bill. That was very helpful information about the early ferry activity in Wapello. It gives me some clues to work with. Jeanne, I would like to connect the Wapello County Surbaugh's into their correct famly groups. Here is some of what I have accumulated thus far: 1. George Washington (GW) Surbaugh born ca 1827 Virginia married Irene Nosler in Wapello County in 1853. They had at least: Florence J. Frank N. Thomas N. John Schober Jennie M. Mary E. Irene was a widow in the 1885 census. 2. Adam H. Surbaugh born ca 1829 Virginia, married Sarah Pickett in 1866 Warren County, Iowa and Adam died there in 1923. A. H. Surbaugh was in the household of a Samuel Shawber[?} in the 1856 Wapello Co census. This Samuel was age 46 and given as born Ohio. I thought the Shawber name (difficult to read on census) seemed close enough to possibly be a spelling change for Surbaugh but I have not pursued Samuel. 3. Benjamin H. Surbaugh born ca 1831 Virginia married Deborah Kooken and they had at least: Harriet E. and George W. I have more on some the children named above. I speculate that GW, Benjamin, and Adam may have been brothers. Would like to confirm or correct that speculation. I I would like to learn the death date and place of George W. husband of Irene Nosler. Any of these people sound familiar to you? Thank you for replying to my query. Hi Vicky and Wapello County searchers ... The name "Surbaugh" has often gotten mixed up with SURBER. And the name "George Washington" had been extremely popular in the Surber family. A couple of different branches of the Surber family have been in Iowa since about 1850. My grandfather (b. 1860 in Keokuk County) was named George Washington SURBER. I grew up in both Keokuk and Wapello County, and lived in Ottumwa for many years. Lots of us around Ottumwa. What else do you have on SURBAUGH, Vicky? I am interested in this family too and have accumulated a few things on them over the years. Jeanne Surber (Iowa transplant in CA) > Looking for the death date and burial of George Washington Surbaugh. He > was enumerated in the 1880 Wapello County census but by 1885, his wife > Irene was a widow. > Anyone researching the Surbaugh line? > Vicky
Jacob Thompson and wife Rhoda were early residents of Wapello County then West to Linn County, Oregon. Jacob was born ca 1822 Kentucky married about 1845 in Indiana to Rhoda (b. ca 1823 IN) and they were in Wapello County by 1850 and headed West in 1852. They had at least two children: James H born ca 1845 IN and Henry E. born ca 1859 Oregon. What was Rhoda's maiden name? Was it EVANS? Who were her parents and siblings? Who were Jacob's parents? I speculate that Jacob was a brother to William T. Thompson also of Wapello Co. William was born ca 1813 Kentucky and married Polly Ann (b. ca 1821 IN) and were in Wapello Co by ca 1848. This William and Polly Thompson are not to be confused with another couple William and Polly Thompson also in Wapello County: This Wm was from Ireland and his wife Polly was born in Ohio. The Wm T. and Polly Ann Thompson of my search, had at least the following issue: Sarah J (1844 IN) John E (1845 IN) William F (1848 Iowa) Martha (1850 Iowa) Julia A (1853 Iowa) Amanda E (1855 Iowa) Arcena (1858 Iowa) Clara B. (1863 Iowa) Was Polly Ann also an EVANS? Anyone searching these Thompson's? Thank you Vicky
Looking for the death date and burial of George Washington Surbaugh. He was enumerated in the 1880 Wapello County census but by 1885, his wife Irene was a widow. Anyone researching the Surbaugh line? Vicky
Does anyone have information on the early ferry activity in Wapello County? I am interested in general information on the early ferry history and would appreciate suggestions for sources that may speak to the subject. I am also interested in the identity of the "first" ferrymen. I found the following short entry in the History of Wapello County, Volume I, published 1914: "[A] man by the name of Martin ran the first ferry." This was the only reference to the ferry activities or ferryman of early Wapello County. Does anyone have an idea who this Martin was? Thank you. Vicky
Mike, Right now I don't show very much on him, but the book written on the 75th anniversary of Ottumwa written in 1923 does show that a Dr. Frank W. Mills was a member of the American Legion (that means he may have served in WWI) and the a Dr. Margaret Mills was on the Board of Directors of the YWCA. I am holding a photocopy of a page I made for each census year 1852 and 1854 (with my famly listed on it) and both those years only list head of family. The best early Iowa state census is the 1856. There is one for Wapello County and that would be LDS FHC microfilm 1021314. The 1856 census year lists all in the family, age, sex, married, widowed, years resident in state of Iowa, occupation, and then continues to add additional details such as voter, owner of farm etc, then an agricultural production and manufacturing schedule. This census is very helpful to help tie down when a family first came to Iowa (not necessarily Wapello County.) There were earlier and later state census years also. Another great one is the 1885 Iowa State census for Wapello County. I have noticed that that one is online (probably saw it on Ancestry), however, the transcriptions are not without errors and it would be better to check the actual census because of the large amount of detail it may provide for your individual family.
