Dear Listmembers, You might know that the newspaper above was published between 1882 and about 1971 in Breda, IA and later in Wall Lake, IA. Now I'm looking for issues of this newspaper between 1916 and 1971 and clippings of obituaries. I would appreciate your answer if you have those items. The clippings can be send by Email (frisian@netins.net) or snail mail to my address (P. O. Box 269, Titonka, Iowa 50480-0269). In return I would send you a translation of the obituary/obituaries. Thank you very much in advance for your help. Sincerely, Hans-Georg Boyken
If you are reasonably sure that Frances and Elmer were married in Wapello County, I will check the next time I go to the library. The Genealogical Society has marriage records through 1936. Brian, I checked the Wapello County marriage records and WPA records without much success. I did find the following in the Mahaska County marriage records: (Mahaska county borders Wapello to the north) William S. Parker married Emma Purdy on 1 Sep 1873. Since this was to make her a ward of the court/welfare/or something close ... then perhaps there is something in probate. There had to be some kind of accounting. It might just depend on whether the records were kept. You might want to look at the daily or weekly newspaper and see if there is a sale bill in the newspaper. Good luck in your search! g2
I have an aunt whose home and personal property was sold at auction by Wapello County to pay her debts when she went into a nursing home and was subsidized by the county-or at least Medicaid in about 1960. The homestead was at 1320 Van Buren and she moved into the (then) Jefferson Manor on Pennsylvania St just a few blocks from her home. Is there any way to get the records of the public auction and an inventory of what items were sold? I don't know where to begin or whom to write for this information. If anyone who knows where I can start looking for these records, I'd be most appreciative for the lead. Thanks in advance. Dar

It was a good try, Steven, but my Karr family came from Maryland to Ross and Highland Counties, Ohio and were in Iowa Wapello, Marion, and Ross Counties before 1850. Good luck on your search! Gayle in Kansas
As near as I can tell Nellie and Elmer had 3 children: Maurice E. Carr, born abt 1904/1905 in Pope County, Illinois; Stanley Thomas Carr, born abt 1910 in Wapello County, Iowa; and Melvin Floyd Carr, born 24 Feb 1912, died 13 Feb 1931 in Wapello County. As I indicated previously, Melvin is buried with his parents in Ottumwa Cemetery. Apparently, by the time of Elmer's death in 1964, both Melvin and Maurice were deceased. Neither is listed in Elmer's obituary. The last know location of Stanley was Newton, Iowa and the last known location of Maurice was Seattle, Washington. I'm looking for the location of Elmer Eugene CARR's grave. He died Feb 24, 1964 and is supposed to be buried in the Odd Fellows (IOOF) Cemetery, Ottumwa, Wapello County, IA. I believe his wife, Nell (LAWRENCE) CARR is also buried there. She died in 1948. He may have had a second wife named Nola. Can anyone confirm any of this? Is this cemetery the same as the large Ottumwa Cemetery that is located east of US 63 and north of Park Ave. If so, how can I find out where in the cemetery the grave is located? (I do not live in Iowa, but plan a visit next month). Elmer CARR was a pharmacist. He had a store in Eldon, IA. Does anyone know about the store? Does it or the building still exist? Thanks in advance, Steve
Hello, Looking for any connection to: Clara Slaughter Walker, probably born late 1800's in possibly MO, to Joseph Slaughter and Alice McLeod. She lived much of her life in Ottumwa, IA and had at least three brothers named Albert Eugene Slaughter, William ("Jack") Slaughter and Charles Slaughter. Also, it is believed she married a second time but this name is unknown. Thank you, John
