Lanigan Date: 9/11/2003 at 14:18:14 Surnames: EASTMAN,CHEEVER,BELKNAP,GARLINGHOUSE Hi, Thanks for your quick response, I don't know whether they were catholic or not... As I've stated, I have Amazilla listed on the 1850 Wapello Census with my 3rd Great Grandmother Emma J.Eastman-Mull living as a child. There were 6 of the 7 known children living in the household at the time. If my secondary source information is right, Amazilla married Joel Eastman in 1831 in Licking County Ohio. The first three (or four)children were born there in Licking with the others born in Iowa. (Still looking for records) Joel moved the family to Wapello county somewhere between 1839 and 1841. I have been informed that there are tax census records listing Joel for 1846 and 1847 (I believe). Another researcher has Joel dying in and around 1848. I requested sources from the other researcher but have not heard from them yet. I have Iowa marriage records indicating Amazilla Eastman remarried a Peli(e)g Che(e)ver in 1855 in Dubuque County Iowa. I have similar marriage records indicating Amazilla's daughters also all married in and around Dubuque. This indicates that the whole family may have "Sold the Farm" Somewhere prior to 1855 and moved to Dubuque. Another clue... one source listed Amazilla's maiden Name as Belknap. Further research indicates that she may have been the daughter of Elijah Belknap and Catherine Garlinghouse of Ontario, New York. If this is Correct, One of her brothers is listed as Gamiliel Belknap who enumerated on the same 1850 census page as Amazilla Eastman there in Wapello. There is also a Garlinghouse and her other brother James M. Belknap listed on the same census record. My problem with this line is that I don't have primary sources backing the excellent secondary information available. I guess what I am looking for is the death information on Joel Eastman or at least proof that he was a resident of Wapello. A death record, a probate record, or tax records would be ideal. Again, thanks for your help and consideration. Regards, Pat *************************************************************************** This is an automatically-generated notice. She can be found on page 479B of the District 13 Census. I am told that her husband was Joel Belknap and that her first several children were born in Licking County Ohio. They moved to Wapello County Iowa in and around 1841. According to one secondary source, Joel Died in 1848 and Amazilla Remarried a Mr. Pelig Cheever of Dubuque IA (1855). It is assumed that the family moved to Dubuque at that time. I am looking for any land, death, or church records that would identify Joel Eastman as either a resident or decedent of Wapello County. Any record enumerating Joel with Amazilla would be appreciated. Thanks for your help! Iowa. I knew he had to have died sometime within about a year but could find no death record in the county....nor anything really about him. I had a birth record for his youngest child in Apr 1881 and a record of the child being given up for adoption in 1882 by his "widow", according to the document. I started reading Fairfield newspapers, line by line beginning around the first of 1880...and finally found a small 3-4 line article in the local news in Feb 1882 saying "Lee Hampton" had gotten sick on Sat., and died the following Tuesday. There's no other record apparently of his death, or his burial. I'm still trying to find what happened to his widow, Clara Hampton, who was about 24 yrs. old. Have you checked the spelling of LANIGAN as perhaps being recorded as two words - maybe as just "John Gan" or even three, "John Lane Gan"? Or perhaps the name "Lanigan John", with "John" being the surname? Did his wife have a Will? I've seen Wills state when the person became a widow or some kind of reference to her deceased husband. Have you checked land records to see when the Title to any property he owned may have been changed @ his death? And, of course, I suppose you've checked to see what if any probate took place when he died. Another thought - are you sure he died between 1870 & 1880 - maybe your gr grandmother's status as a "widow" is incorrect, or could there have been a divorce? I remember my Dad talking about women who had divorced when he was a child (in the 1890's) calling themselves "grass widows". Good luck to you - hopefully you'll find it in the most unsuspected place or record. juanita *************************************************************************** This is an automatically-generated notice.
