In fact, I don't find anything on him until 1930. In 1930 he shows up in Wapello county with wife Alice M., sons Frank E., Charles, James B. and daughter Gladys R.. Since all children were born in Iowa that indicates that he most likely was here the entire time. In 1900 he will be difficult to find since he was most likely living with someone else and would not be a head of household. In 1910 he could have been anywhere, living with a relative or even as a border somewhere. I did notice that, in 1930, he was listed as working in a packing house so he most likely worked for John Morrell & Co. That may be what he did in Waterloo as they have several packing houses as well. BTW the social security death index shows that he was born in 1890. *************************************************************************** This is an automatically-generated notice. 1. [IAWAPELL] Genealogy Poem: Census
    2. Hello all, I thought you might enjoy this. Regards, Carol ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The First Day Of Census" It was the first day of census, and all through the land each pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride, his book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there, toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face and wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table and she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked her of children. Yes, she had quite a few -- the oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride, and she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... the marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head and saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot" was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear, but she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such, they could read some ... and write some ... though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done so he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear, "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me as we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow as we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day that the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel and the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen -- the words they impart through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. --- Author unknown.

My grandmother, Ada, was the oldest child of Levi and Clara E. HAMPTON. They were married in Meigs Co. Ohio, went to Fairfield, Iowa where Ada was born 1877. There were two other children: Edward, born 1879 and Anna Elizabeth (called Gracie) born Apr 1881..adopted by Wm. Adams in Fairfield in Nov 1882. She was renamed Mary Elizabeth Adams. Levi Hampton died after a 3-4 da. illness from pneumonia Feb 1882 in Fairfield. I found this only reference to his death in a Fairfield newspaper. Clara gave Ada to Eliza E. Willard, according to Eliza's divorce record from Emmett M. Willard. I've never found what happened to Edward Hampton. Clara Hampton seems to have disappeared from Jefferson Co. the latter part of 1882. I found a notice in a Fairfield newspaper that her house was being sold in Nov 1882 for non-payment of taxes (less than $2.00!) I've not found a re-marriage for her. She'd have been in her middle to late 20's at time she was widowed. Nor have I found a death record. Her maiden name was Stidger. I traced the history of her siblings insofar as I could. Her brother, Harmon P. Stidger, moved from OH to Fairfield also and lived there a no. of years before returning to OH. I have his obituary from a Columbus newspaper as well as the Fairfield newspaper when he died 1926. His sister, Clara, was not mentioned as a survivor. I suspect she probably married again in Jefferson Co., or possibly Wapello Co. but thus far, my searches have proven NIL. *************************************************************************** This is an automatically-generated notice.
