Our family moved to Cedar Falls Iowa in 1990 from Indiana. We thought we were the first in our family to set foot in this state. To my surprise I find that we are descendants of Iowa pioneers! Jacob and Barbara Nixon came to Van Buren County in the 1850's or late 40's. Barbara is buried in Dibble cemetery according to Nixon Family Memorials, Jean Cox editor. Other Nixon family members came to Iowa and stayed, but Jacob returned to Ohio after his wife's death and remarried. I have begun searching for deeds (or other information about the family while they were in Iowa), an obituary or any record of death information on Barbara . I believe her tombstone reads "Barbary Nixon" and she died in 1853 or 1856 (sources vary). I have not been able to get to Van Buren County (weather, time) and don't know what information might be available or the cost for any copies of records. I would be most grateful for any pointers or information available on this family. Barbara's parents were George and Margaret Troutman. I have been successful connecting to some other links for them.
Kay There is a Nixon Family history book in the collection at the Van Buren Co. library in Keosauqua. Perhaps it is the same Cox book that you are referring to. Your Barbara Troutman through her brother John is of my mother-in-law's Troutman line. In addition a first cousin of mine is tied in to the Nixon side. It's unlikely you will find an obit. for that early but it's worth trying. When the weather improves a bit, I'd be glad to "slip" out to Dibble cemetery and take a digital snapshot of her stone if I can find it. Seems like I did see it the one time I was out there a couple of years ago. Rich Kay Leeper wrote: > Our family moved to Cedar Falls Iowa in 1990 from Indiana.
