Robert J Gardner b. 1847 was listed in the 1880 Fremont County, Iowa (listed as R.J.) with wife Sarah,b. 1856, 4 children and his Mother in law-61 year old Mary Campbell. This is my Great Grandfather. Grandfather (James A. Gardner) was born in Apr 1881 in Van Buren county, Iowa. Robert was born in Iowa but Sarah was born in Ohio. I am assuming that since the mother in law's last name was Campbell that was Sarah's maiden name also. I haven't found marriages licenses or birth records on any of this family. Sarah was out of the picture by 1900 as Robert and his children show up in the Taney County, Missouri census in that year. Robert & Sarah's children are: Mucie, Leon, Nelson A, Hugh A, James A, Clary Erma, & Edith E. These children were born in Iowa. The last one was born in 1886, so Sarah may have died in childbirth and Robert moved to Missouri to be with kin. There were Gardners in Missouri as early as 1860 but until I know more about Robert Gardner and his parents, I can't prove they were family. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who can shed some light on this difficult family. This has been my brick wall for the last ten years. I have tried just about every list possible. Robert Gardner 39 Farmer Real estate value $3600 Personal estate $900. b. Ireland Rachel 30 b. Ireland John 11 b. Iowa & attending school Hugh 9 b. Iowa & attending school Thomas 8 b. Iowa & attending school Margaret Hill 26 Servant b. Ireland Sarah Hill 1 b. Ireland These people are not related to me and the reason I am sending this is because Van Buren County is so close to Missouri and Fremont isn't all that far away from here either. Hope this helps.
