Thanks Rich and Fran, I found four of the Hancock's there that I was looking for a couple of weeks ago, and can now confirm that my gg grandfather's first wife did die before he left Iowa for California, and that the Jonas Hancock I found on the 1850 Iowa census was my gg grandfather John Hancock. Now I just need to find out where there three children from the first marriage disappeared to after the mother's death. Thanks again ever so much!
