    3. Hello All, Thanks to a response I received from Connie....the most probable cemetery where my long, sought after Great Grandmother's final resting place is Purdom Cemetery near Keosauqua. Do any of you know whether a WPA or other index for that cemetery exists....and where I might lay my hands on the information. I am searching for information on the date of death of Mary Ann [Perkins] Freeman. Any help on locating her final resting place would be most welcome. Hope Freeman Carnicle Phoenix, AZ

Ia Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/VanBuren/1233 Surname: ALEXANDER, HUSTON ------------------------- My Mother and Roxie played together when they were little girls. Would it be possible for you to post her obituary. I would certainly like to have a copy if that is possible. It is not known to us what became of her. Whether she had a family or what. Also, I and others are interested in knowing why Charles middle name is Huston. I am wondering if his Mother or another ancestor may have been a Huston. Do you know of any connection to the Huston families that came to Van Buren Co? Do you know his parents names? Thanks very much for responding to my posting.

    1. Van Buren Twp 1860 Census
    2. Rich Lowe
    3. For those with ancestors in Van Buren Twp., the 1860 census transcription is complete and has been uploaded. Van Buren township was the 2nd largest township in 1860 behind Farmington township, which at the time also contained what was later to become Bonaparte township. This makes a total of 9 of the 12 townships complete. On page 505, I'm quite sure is the person who was to become our county's Congressional Medal of Honor winner during the Civil War, Voltaire Twombly. He was listed by the enumerator as Voltaire Pombley, salesman. ___________________________________________________________ «¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»¥«¤»§«¤» Rich Lowe richlowe@web-iowa.com Van Buren Co. 3. Sherri I talked to our county historian today who told me the Shepherd House was a successful hotel located at the corner of First and Dodge Streets, across from the Old Farmer's Creamery. An apartment house stands there now. There is a stone building behind it that likely dates from the original time of the Shepherd House. According to the historian, it was probably the more successful of the hotels in town because they were known to server better food than their competitors. In the 1878 Bios section, Van Buren Twp., you will also find a bio on a James Shepherd in which the establishment was referred to as the "Keosauqua House". http://www.rootsweb.com/~iavanbur/bio_vanburen_2.htm Rich ___________________________________________________________ «¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»¥«¤»§«¤» Rich Lowe richlowe@web-iowa.com Van Buren Co. 3. I've hit a wall and wondered if anyone out there can help? I'm researching Archibald Campbell and an having trouble with this wife, Catherine Houk (or Houck). They were located in the Leando/Douds area in the late 1800's. Does anyone have info on Catherine's family? I've seen the Houk name but haven't had any luck connecting it to the Campbells. I'm also looking for info on Archibald's son, Alexander Cambell's wife, Keziah Ann McComas. I have her father as Daniel McComas and mother as Catherine Grandstaff. Is Daniel connected with the Daniel in Maryland (1685) of the McComas Brothers from Scotland? Thanks for any info. Bonnie
