Ia Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/VanBuren/1257 Surname: ------------------------- While back home this past weekend, February 4, 2001, I had the opportunity to visit Rhodes Cemetery between Farmington and Bonaparte. Even with the snow cover, it was very easy to find using the maps Rich has posted on the VBC WebPage. Unfortunately, it is in the same poor condition as described by Ernie Lunsford on an August 13, 2000 posting on this forum. In addition to the Webpage map, one needs to keep a sharp eye for the large cedar trees that Ernie also mentions. I have a suggestion for anyone that knows someone needing an Eagle Scout Project or knows of a Boy Scout Troop that is looking for an excellent community service project. Having been a Scoutmaster for several years, I am in a habit making mental notes for an Eagle Project or a worthwhile service project for the community. I know of several abandoned mountain cemeteries in Colorado have been cleaned up and restored to a very respectful condition by Boy Scouts. The same thing can be done by any service organization, but I am partial to the Boy Scout program. Should a scout troop take this on for a project, I would like very much to hear about the results. Charles and Frederick Holliday were farmers in 1878 in Van Buren County at Sector 26 PO Hillsboro.I have much of their ancestry but other than the names of their wives and children I have not been able to find any sign of them since that time . Charles was married to Mabel J.Penny on February 8 1870 in Van Buren County and their children all born in Van Buren Countywere: Holly J.Holliday born about 1871 , William J.Holliday, born about 1875 and Boyd J.Holliday born in August 1879. Frederick, born in Van Buren January 31 1845 was married to Mary Weaver in Van Buren on March 12 1873 and they had three sons, all born in Van Buren: Walter N.(about 1874) Eddie H.(about 1876) and Delver D(about 1878) If anyone has any connection to any of these Hollidays I hope that you will share it with me: I will of course be happy to share my knowledge of the Holliday family back to the 1700's with you - and trace what became of those who stayed in the UK (their father came over to the USA in the late 1820s)
Would anyone have records that show who Van Buren County Court Judges were from abt 1837-1860. I have a History of Nebraska clip about my relative Riley Wescoatt, which indicates that Riley's father Joseph Wescoatt removed to Van Buren Co. sometime after 1837 and was "judge of the Van Buren County Court at this time, and had been a ember of the Territorial Legislature at one time." I'd like to find some sort of records that can verify this. Any help is greatly appreciated. Greetings Listmembers! Up until now there has not been a good location for visitors to record info on marriages of their Van Buren Co. ancestors including clippings from the newspapers that many of us have in our files. GenConnect has promised for some time (a couple years) that this Board was in the plans but we've seen nothing develop. So, rather than wait, we've come up with a suitable Board of our own for your use. Those entered should have a Van Buren Co. connection, but would not necessarily need to have been married in Van Buren Co. or while living in Van Buren Co. You will find the site at http://web-iowa.com/marriageboard.html . It is also linked from our main site at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~iavanbur/ As with the other Boards, many connections are made as the result of you and I posting info on our ancestors. You are invited and encouraged to add your ancestors wedding info to this new database. I have personally entered a couple of LOWE marriages if you would like to see what they will look like once in the database. Comments and suggestions are always welcomed. Ia Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/VanBuren/1240 Surname: Claflin, Swires, Swiers, Seviers, Robinson ------------------------- I have had quite a time with the Swires name. I have found it spelled many ways in different records ie. the 1860 Census Records has Swiers, the Van Buren County early marriages has my great grandmother's name as Maria Seviers but has her parents as John Swiers and Ellen Claflin in one place and Allen Claflin and John Swiers in another. I have the transcript of Ellen's 1891 diary with the dates of these things so I am quite sure they are the same people. In the diary, it speaks of May but it is not known if she was a child or not and there is no date of her birth. If there is more info some place, please let me know. Facts in the diary state the following: Maria was born 1/11/1856, daughter of Hannah Ellen Claflin, born 1/19/1837, and John Swiers, born 3/28/1829. They were married 3/11/1855. They had 6 children named, Maria, Annie, Susie, George, Dora, and May. All have birth dates but May. I am assuming this should be Mary as stated in the 1860 Census.
