Does anyone have an address and telephone number for Bentonsport Cemetery. I have at least four Hancock ancestors there and would like to find out if there are any more there. Thanks to the post regarding the Van Buren County, Iowa D.A. R Grave Records 1936 I found where my gg grandfathers 1st wife Elizabeth Pittenger Hancock is buried and when she died (2-26-1852). I know he moved to SF, Calif after his wifes death, but I cant find their three children anywhere as yet. The wife was buried with relatives that all lived in Bentonsport, Van Buren Iowa at the Bentonsport Cemetery, even though she and John (aka Jonas) actually lived in Keokuk, Lee Co., Iowa at the time of the 1850 Iowa Census. I did find out today that there was a cholera epidemic in Lee County around 1852, so perhaps the children died around this same time frame, in Lee County or Van Buren County. I am hoping that the children may also be buried with the mother in Bentonsport Cemetery. Does anyone know if this DAR list is a complete list of burials for this cemetery or just a partial list? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Maggie Hall

Thanks Rich and Fran, I found four of the Hancock's there that I was looking for a couple of weeks ago, and can now confirm that my gg grandfather's first wife did die before he left Iowa for California, and that the Jonas Hancock I found on the 1850 Iowa census was my gg grandfather John Hancock. Now I just need to find out where there three children from the first marriage disappeared to after the mother's death. Thanks again ever so much! Guess I'm not sure what else you are looking for.. You can search for a surname, or even put in just the first letter of the surname, for example, if you wish to see all surnames beginning with a particular letter. The result is exactly what the D.A.R. microfilm lists. There is a link called "Search Hints" right under the search box that may help. Rich Bob and Sue Rezek wrote: > Hi Rich, > Is the D.A.R. It appears that the Discussion lists are back up. At least I have received mail from other lists and a new subscription for this list. As of this writing, the Van Buren Co. GenWeb web site is up but none of our GenConnect Boards are working yet. Trusting/hoping that they too will be back on line soon. Apparently RootsWeb "24 hr. plan" for having the system down ran into complications of some sort. Thanks for your patience. Betty, Could you look in your book for any Martin deaths in Davis county. Thanks, Joelyn James Vicksburg, Ms
Betty is not a member of this discussion list. She wrote me directly and I forwarded her message to this list. You will need to write her directly or join the Davis Co. list. There is a link to Davis Co. from the Van Buren Co. GenWeb page. Her email address was at the bottom of the message she sent. I don't know if the people mentioned in this article had any real connection to Van Buren Co. or not, but apparently the story was in a Farmington newspaper in 1911. If anyone knows of a connection, please let the rest of us know. Regardless, if true, it is quite a story! Rich ---------------------- MARRIED 10 YEARS WITH 19 CHILDREN by Chandra Martin lunar@ipa.net I stumbled across an article that I found so fascinating I want to share it with everyone. I have no relation to the family, but perhaps someone out there will appreciate having it. There are sure to be lots of descendants. >From the ILLINOIS-IOWA-MISSOURI SEARCHER, Vol. 16 #1 Issue 53, page 25 (originally from THE NEWS-REPUBLICAN, Farmington, Iowa, April 6, 1911, but the dateline is Muskogee, Oklahoma). Married 10 Years, Have 19 Children Muskogee, OK -- Mr. and Mrs. Frank Scott of Highland, Kansas, are seeking a home in this state with plenty of land. They will need it, for although they have been married not quite ten years, they are the parents of nineteen children, all boys, and thirteen of them living. They hold the record for triplets, having five sets to their credit, and two sets of twins. All of her thirteen boys are under five years. Recently the Scotts, deciding that they must find more land, went to Alberta, Canada. They were not satisfied there and returned. On the return trip Mrs. Scott and her thirteen children all rode on one first-class ticket. At Omaha the conductor made a vigorous protest. "Madam, you cannot carry a whole Sunday School along with you on that one ticket," he said, "and you need not tell me those are all yours. You will have to pay for some of them." "The rules of this railroad provide that a child under five years may ride free, when accompanied by its parent with a first-class ticket, don't they?" retorted Mrs. Scott. "They do, but you will have to show me." Mrs. Scott dug down into her valise and brought out the Family Bible in which was recorded the names and ages of each of the children. The conductor had to give in. The mother and children occupied five double seats in the homeseekers' car and paid for only one. The names and ages of the children are: Ashbell, Archer and Austin, triplets 4 1/2 years old; Arthur and Arnold, twins, 3 1/2; Allan, Almon and Albin, triplets, 2 1/2; Albert, Albion and Adolph, triplets, 18 months; Abel and Abner, twins, 6 months. Mrs. Scott is 30 years old and her husband is only a year her senior. The mother and children are now in Highland [Doniphan County] Kansas, while the father is in Oklahoma seeking a location.
Thanks, Betty. I will forward a copy of this to the IAVANBUR-L discussion list for all to see in case there is someone here of interest. I don't think Edmonson Cem. is a Van Buren Co. cemetery, however. Thanks again.
