    3. To the best of my knowledge, there was not an 1875 Van Buren Co. Iowa Census. 3. Clarence Smith Detwiler, son of John Detwiler, became a telegraph agent in Bonaparte prior to the 1860 census and was listed as a railroad agent on the 1870 census. He married Frances Merrick in McDonough County, Illinois in 1871, so I assumed he had left Van Buren County. Today, I found the 1878 Bonaparte Twp., Van Buren County, Biographical Directory of Citizens which lists him as a telegraph operator. Was there a state census in 1875 that could show whether Smith and his wife were in Bonaparte or not?

    3. They should check with the state historical libraries first to see if they will loan them. The census can also be rented through AGLL. It's been a long time since I've done this, but I can check locally and see what the procedure is, if you would like. 3. Census records on microfilm are available from a number of sources. 1. Try locating a Family History Center near you. You can order in any census film for a small rental fee. To find a Family History Center near you, you can use the search engine at: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp If you are not family with Family History Centers, one of many good sites is: http://www.amberskyline.com/treasuremaps/lds1.html 2. The National Archives and Records Administration has a rental program. You can learn more about it at http://www.nara.gov/publications/microfilm/micrent.html 3. Heritage Quest has a rental microfilm program in addition to their digitized microfilm on CDs for sale. http://www.heritagequest.com 4. The National Archives has 11 regional branches located in various areas of the country. The locations, hours, etc. can be learned at: http://www.nara.gov/nara/gotonara.html 5. There are a number of other large libraries that have complete, or nearly complete, sets of US census records. One of the Allen County Public Library in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. http://www.acpl.lib.in.us/genealogy/whoweare.html The Newberry Library in Chicago has a nearly complete collection. http://www.newberry.org/nl/genealogy/L3gabout.html The Sutro Library in San Francisco has a complete collection http://www.onelibrary.com/Library/calslsut.htm I'm sure there are many others as well. The census is one of the most valuable resources for genealogy research. Learning to use these schedules to their fullest will enhance your knowledge and understanding of your family. Thanks, Virginia When you come back to Van Buren Co. in June, be sure to allow time to spend not only at the courthouse but also at the Keosauqua Library where the extensive collection of the Van Buren Co. historical society is housed. You will find it worth your while, I'm sure.
