Ia Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/VanBuren/11323 Surname: HARWOOD ------------------------- According to the 1860 census, that is posted on the Van Buren Co website in case you haven't checked it out, it shows Jane Harwood had several siblings. Her parents were Thomas and Mary Harwood. Charles is one of their children also and he was b Ca 1848 in Ohio and a possible clue, one brother James was an attorney. Maybe the father Thomas had a brother Charles. They definitely could be related. That is as far back as I have traced that line. Hope it helps a bit with your deduction.

    3. Posted on: VanBuren Co. Ia Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/VanBuren/11322 Surname: MADDEN ------------------------- Betty, I have wondered since I was a little girl if the Maddens of Cantril were related to my Madden family of Mt Sterling. There are only a few miles between the two towns. How could they not be related? The name is not that common. My family said they didn't think they are related and I have met one member of the Cantril Madden family that said he didn't think they were related to the Mt Sterling clan. If you should find a trail leading back to Londonderry Guernsey Co Ohio or even farther back to Londonderry Ireland, they could very well be connected. I know my GGG Grandfather John Madden had to have had siblings that came with him to this country in early 1800s. Thomas Harvey Madden had a son named Joseph Bates Madden. Which tells me the name Joe was used in both groups of families. But, the Irish seemed to use the same names in every family, so it is less likely that we can use given names as a sign of relationship, please correct me if I'm wrong. How far back have you been able to trace your line? Thanks for your posting.

Ia Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/VanBuren/11320 Surname: VAN AUKEN, HALES, SHRIVER ------------------------- Thank you for the little remembrances. They are very pleasing and fun to read. A nice change from just names and dates. I didn't know these people myself, but I'm sure my Mother could vouch for at least some of what you said. She was probably at the shivaree too. I do have a marriage date for Helen Shriver and Harold Van Auken of 4 Jun 1932 at Kahoka Clark Co Missouri. I have also learned Emma Cook was the wife of Peter Van Auken. Mary Elvira Hales is my husband's great grandmother, so he is blood relation. T F Hales was my great aunt Allie Miller's husband. He is not a blood relative to me, but I heard aunt Allie Hales mentioned so many times it seems more connected. I have posted my photo of the Christian Church people of Mt Sterling standing on it's steps. Check it out and see if you can identify anyone. T F and Allie are there, she is in the wheelchair and he is standing beside her with his hand on the wheelchair. I would be interested in knowing if you agree that is indeed T F Hales. I have seen the posting for the reunion, but I can't attend. I wish that I could. I hope they have a big turnout and it is a great success. Thanks for your help.

    3. Posted on: VanBuren Co. Ia Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/VanBuren/11317 Surname: Van Auken, Hales ------------------------- Hello, FYI, I can confirm Marian Cox's response with these comments. I was born and reared in Vernon Twp on the Hales farmstead adjacent to Austin and Carrie Van Auken with Indian Creek running between our farms. While I am not a blood relative I recall a number of things about this family. I recall that Carrie was related to the Hunters. In my family researching I copied a 1900/1909 landowner atlas which lists M.P. Van Auken as the owner of 200 acres in Section 3 Vernon Twp this is about 3 miles east and a bit north of the now-nearly-extinct town of Mt. Sterling. M.P. is likely Austin's dad Peter. I knew Harold and Helen very well, the first neighborhood shivaree that I remember as a small boy was theirs about 1930? Harold had a sister, Opal, who I think was older, she married a man named Russell, they lived in Fairfield for many years. I would say that Mr. Russell's name should appear in the Fairfield City directory in the 50's to maybe 70's. I don't think they had issue. Opal was educated, attractive, traveled a great deal selling something like encyclopedias, was an “old maid” probably all of 25yrs, told fascinating stories, greatly impressing this country boy! Austin was rather crippled, he was severely injured by a pet bull that he trusted too far. One last thing, I seem to recall that Marian Cox has some connection to my Hales family. Is it from my grand father John P.D. Hales whose sister was Mary Elvira (Hales) Cox? Finally have you seen where there is to be a Hales Family Reunion this June 29,30-July 1. If I can be of help to anyone — I've been doing genealogy on the VB County HALES, WATKINS, HERRINGTON and descendants for more than 40 years Charles E. Hales Sun City, AZ

    3. Sally Be sure when you post to put in an appropriate subject. Many folks would delete a message without even reading it that contained the subject "subscribe". We can't always assume, as I often do, that those subscribing to this list have necessarily visited the Van Buren Co. GenWeb site. There you will find the 1860 Federal Census and your Mahlon Johnston is listed as a 13 year old with his parents (S. B. Johnston) and siblings. While it gives S. B. Johnston's birthplace as PA, it doesn't list his parents. http://www.rootsweb.com/~iavanbur/census/html1860/WashingtonTwp/323.HTM You will find "Johnstons" on pages 322-323-324 of Washington township which likely means they lived fairly close to each other. If you haven't already done so, I'd suggest posting a query on the query board also which you will find linked from the Van Buren page. Rich Lowe richlowe@web-iowa.com Van Buren Co.
