    3. Posted on: VanBuren Co. Ia Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/VanBuren/11353 Surname: Drummond ------------------------- Hi! Very huge thanks for the letter of Verna Lewis...it is quite something that she also mentions that the Drummond family of Van Buren County, Iowa, listed from 1860 census onward, could perhaps have come from the Virginia's. Despite that there is a rootsweb listing of some Drummond with such similar names and one date for Rebecca seems right on, somehow I find no evidence that they came from anywhere other than via Portage County, Ohio where Rebecca and Stephen Hopkins were married in, I think, 1837, from Jefferson County, New York. Early Jefferson histories give that Duncan and John Drummond came there from Perth, Scotland at about 1803, and since an old cemetery there gives about 8 Drummond burials, and since Henry, of Van Buren county, said he was born at Jefferson county, somehow the Virginia connection for our line doesn't fit, unless someone could clue me in, for which I'd be grateful..... THANKS again! Someday we will discover Rebecca's parentage and birthplace. In the, I believe, 1820 or 1830 Jefferson Co. New York census, under John Drummond, the ages fit..I don't have my notebook at the tip of my finger at this minute, so cannot be precise. What is your connection? You probably said, but my brain doesn't remember....grin...Kris.......

Ia Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/VanBuren/11352 Surname: Fritzinger, Ankeny, Eby, Weir, pender ------------------------- Jacob Fritzinger was born in Ohio in 1822 and went to Van Buren County Iowa to homestead. He died at his home in Bonaparte, Iowa June 5th, 1896. He was first married to Catherine EBY and second to Mary C. Weir. In 1885 he married Flora Pender. Jacob had at least 6 children one of whom was George Washington Fritzinger. I do not know if the Ankeny family continued the contact with this family as they had in Pa and Ohio. I am hoping to make contact with any living decendents and to learn more about Jacob and his decendency. Any response will be appreciated. I am a gg nephew on my mothers side.

Ia Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/VanBuren/11351 Surname: BONER, WALKER, BECK, BOOTH, HINDS, KECK, LOOMIS, STARR, WILSON ------------------------- The above names were all mentioned in the book, PLATTE RIVER ROAD NARRATIVES by Merrill J. Mattes, University of Illinois Press, 1988. These men left Van Buren County over a period of several months in 1850 for the Gold Fields of California. They crossed the Missouri River at Kanesville (Council Bluffs, IA). All kept journals of their trip (except the unfortunate Mr. Boner). Their names as listed in the book are: David Boner (died enroute by drowning in a creek), David was the friend of Joseph A. Keck, Zachariah Walker, Morris H. Beck, Caleb Booth, Rev. T. W. Hinds, Leander V. Loomis, J. R. Starr, and William Wilson. This book can be obtained through inter-library loan if your library does not have a copy. It retails for $95.00. I am not related to any of these men. I am interested in this subject because my 3rd great grandfather, George Miner, and two of his brother-in-laws, Luther and Alonzo Sargeant left in 1850 for the gold fields. They traveled across land going to California and returned by boat. They walked across the Isthmus of Panama, got on another boat and went up the Mississippi River, returning to Van Buren County in 1852.

I have not yet found a connection between this family of Drummonds and Lowell Dean's and mine. Only the name is the same. As a matter of fact, I found a posting on GenForum Drummond site about Rebecca Drummond/Stephen Hopkins. It indicates those Drummonds were from Kinderhook, Columbia Co., New York, and has the exact same names as listed above. Our Drummonds came to the Van Buren County, Iowa and Scotland County, Missouri area from Virginia. We can trace them back to Joshua Drummond in the 1700s, not the Josiah mentioned in Verna Lewis' letter.

Ia Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/VanBuren/11342 Surname: ------------------------- Letter dated Dec.1,1974, from Verna Lewis of Mesa, AZ to Lowell Dean Drummond, Farmington, Van Buren Co., IA. Dear Drummond (Cousin?) Bless your heart for writing us--even after 9 years. perhaps we're even more delighted than ever to hear from you. I wish I could say that we had found more. But while we never pass up a Drummond name---still we turned the actual Research on the Drummond line over to Eddie's sister because we just couldn't handle it all. But I'm afraid she has not gone further. We're glad you have been looking for Drummond folks--It's interesting isn't it! We still feel we just must be a relative--the fact that you are living in Iowa where our Drummonds moved is a good sign. And tho' we don't feel Alice Rebecca is our Rebecca because her birth would be about 1842 and our Rebecca was born about 1819. Oh good--I just found our Drummond foldeer--it seemed misplaced--& my memory wasn't that good--We have Rebecca's brothers and sisters from an old letter to her daughter Marietta (Hopkins)Fellows--as William Jacob, Olive, Andrew, Catherine, John, Henry, Abraham & ? Mary.--We are wondering if her brother William couldn't be your great grandfather James Henry's father--and Alice Rebecca named for our Rebecca--Ages would be okay & really sounds possible--Have you searched census in West Virginia or do you know any more about them? Wm Willis & Malinda Mason or Josiah D & Mary Kidwell--do you know where Wm Willis died in 1881? This is exciting to have a new hope. We have a note on a Josiah--We will check that---If we can only find them in an 1850 census it will give more. We'll try West Virginia and Iowa again. Meantime just had to thank you so much and ask if you'd share anything more you have & your pedigree. We have found Andrew, Jacob & Henry in 1860 Van Buren Census--& an estate settlement of Abraham mentioning Rebecca. Hopefully, Verna

    3. Posted on: VanBuren Co. Ia Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/VanBuren/11341 Surname: Drummond ------------------------- Hello! Regarding your message involving Van Buren County, Iowa family, Drummond, I do so appreciate your response. Yes, Eddie & Verna Lewis are both deceased now, (Mesa, Arizona as residence till the last few years) and Eddie's family lived in Van Buren County until the family, with the Fulmer Wilshire Fellows family, went to Arizona, about 1900. Fulmer married Marietta Hopkins, daughter of Stephen and Rebecca (Drummond) Hopkins, at Van Buren Co. and went to Arizona. To date, I know of noone who has discovered a death date or place for Rebecca; there was only a family rumor that she "went West" with their son, Roswell. I did find that Roswell was in a census in Utah, but no Rebecca; he also responded when Stephen tried to get a pension from the loss of 3 of his sons in the Civil War. The Van Buren County marriage records show that Stephen re-married Sarah E. Nason in May 1871 so perhaps the letter will shed some light on it. If it is not long, you may just type the words onto this message area....Do you know how Lowell was related to Rebecca? THANK YOU!!!

Ia Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/VanBuren/11340 Surname: HALES, BENNETT, MILLER ------------------------- Gene Here is the url for the photo. It's located on the Van Buren Co home page under the Old Photos section for Mt Sterling. http://www.rootsweb.com/~iavanbur/oldphotos_mtst.htm I only know a few in this photo and they are L-R Ernest Madden my dad and I think he was maybe 12 years old which would make the photo around 1919 or 1920. Then there are some distant cousins the Bennett children probably the oldest, Lillie May, Lloyd Thomas, Ellen Caroline, Madeline Isabel. The gentleman in front is not known to me, but the lady in the wheelchair is Allice Mae Miller Hales and the man holding the wheelchair is her husband Thomas Franklin Hales according to my mother. The couple on the right side are John Robert and Emma Pettit Madden. The others I have no idea. Yes, I have heard others say Allie Mae was a large woman and my mother says her sister Tunie Miller who is my g grandmother was also large. Allie looks in the picture like she could have been cantankerous, but I've never heard anyone say that about her at all and my mother thinks Grandma Tunie was a saint. It would be great if you could download this picture and open it in something you can magnify it in. You can get a good look at the person at the very top even. If I knew them, I could definitely identify them. I would send you a jpg or bmp if you like. I was glad I could see the people, but wish there could be more of the church in view. It burned at some time later. I wonder if any records were saved. I would like to know more of the details about it. You had told me about your photo in earlier correspondances. It really sounds wonderful and I would love to see it naturally. I am sure Rich would post it too should you care to do so. Maybe someone online would recognize some of the people. Also, I could download it and show it to my mother who may know several of those people. This is what I was hoping that if anyone recognized anyone in my photo, they would let me know the identity. I have another question for you, I was looking through the Hales Chronicles online and it lists the several Hugh Hales in our line with spouses and I'm wondering if you know whether they are correct. I would like to be able to put them in my database. http://hales.org/chronicles.html Thanks very much. Marian Cox

Ia Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/VanBuren/11336 Surname: Rinabarger, Reddick, Gnash, Brewster ------------------------- Laurial, the earliest Rinabarger I have in Iowa is Henry Rinabarger born 01 Aug 1808 Pennsylvania and died 08 Sep 1893. He married Eva Reddick born 03 Jan 1811 Ohio died 28 Nov 1890. Both buried in Egypt Cem, Jackson Twp, Van Buren Co, IA. Jackson Twp is where they lived. Their first four chldren seem to have been born in Indiana (possibly Rush Co) with the 5th & 6th children born in Iowa. It appears Henry & Eva and first four children moved to Iowa from Indiana between abt 1840-1846. I haven't done alot of research on them yet...some of their children were: 1) JOHN RINABARGER (1830-1921) m. Lovina Gnash & had 6 or 7 children 2) ELIZABETH RINABARGER (1837-1910) m. Thomas Gnash & had at least 5 children. 3) ELEANOR RINABARGER (1838-1875) is buried Center Chapel Cemetery in Vernon Twp, Van Buren Co, IA. Don't know anything else. She's not with her parents in 1860. Her headstone is Rinabarger - maybe she never married? 4) ASA RINABARGER born abt 1840 in Indiana. Nothing else known. 5) WILLIAM RINABARGER (1846-1912) married Rebecca Ellen Brewster (1848-1928) and had 3 boys. They are buried in Center Chapel Cem. See Obit forum-William's obit posted there but is inaccurate-states he moved with parents to Iowa when 18 [this would be c1864 but his parents are in Jackson Twp, Van Buren Co in 1860 census which shows both William & Artemesia born in Iowa). THIS IS MY CONNECTION. 6) ARTEMESIA RINABARGER born abt 1854 Iowa, died before 1912. Nothing else known. William's obit also states he had four brothers and four sisters, so I am missing three sibling names....John was the only sibling living in April 1912 and he was in Oklahoma. There are some unidentified Rinabarger obits in the Obit Forum that may be connected as well as some posted in this family. So, all of this seems to tell us Henry was in Pennsylvania and Eva was in Ohio, both moved to Indiana then went on to Iowa. But of course, we need to research and confirm. Does any of the above sound familiar? I would like to know more on the Rinabarger family myself!
