    3. As you may have read on the Van Buren Co GenWeb site, the IAGenWeb organization is working hard to develop a proprietary set of boards for posting Queries, Obituaries, Bios and other Documents. This set of boards will be our own and not subject to control by any outside organizations. Just wanted to let you know that we are getting verrrrry close to having these available to us. In fact, I have been part of the team working on their development these past several weeks and Van Buren Co. has been the prototype set of boards that we have been working on. Ours should be the first up and running. You will find some new features that we think you will like very much. I will encourage you in advance to post your obits, bios, etc. to these new boards as these will be the set of boards folks visiting the Van Buren Co. site will see featured. And if you have posted to the old Rootweb Boards, we would encourage you to resubmit your info to the new boards as soon as they are up and running. More info will be coming soon. Rich Van Buren Co. 1. [IAVANBUR] Rootsweb & Ancestry Down
    2. Rich Lowe
    3. Sometime early yesterday something went afoul at Ancestry and much of the county has not been able to access either Ancestry.Com or the Rootsweb Boards since that time. That is the situation with me as well and since I use a census index from Ancestry.Com as one of several tools in proofreading the 1870 census, I'm out of business for the present. If you are unable to reach either site, you may be able to do so by going to an alternative address with is their IP number. Here's a recent announcement that came through early this morning. "The connection problem for ancestry.com has been fixed. Ancestry expects it will be another day maybe two before the corrected information is globally propagated. You can connect use http://216.10.103.21/ to connect to ancestry.com http://63.92.86.187 to connect to boards.ancestry.com" I don't believe either will allow you to log in, however, but you should be able to browse. Sounds like all links should be back to normal for everyone within a couple of days. Rich

    1. [IAVANBUR] 1930 Census
    2. Rich Lowe
    3. For those awaiting the release of the 1930 Federal Census, your wait is getting shorter as it will be released to the public on April 1, 2002. By federal law, the government must wait 72 years. I personally am keeping my fingers crossed that it will turn up some useful info that will help me find the roots of my granddad Lowe, the ornery cuss. I'll be particularly interested in what it says for his place of birth, his parent's place of birth, and his military service. It has been reported previously he was born in both NY and IN and that he was in the Spanish American War and the Boer War which were going on at the same time in different parts of the world. <g> If you are interested in what the 1930 census will furnish in the way of information, a copy of the enumerator's instructions can be found at: http://www.ipums.umn.edu/~pipums/voliii/inst1930.html «¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»¥«¤» Rich Lowe IAVanBuren@web-iowa.com Van Buren Co. 3. Dear listers, Seeking ANY information about Isaac Newton Thompson. It is known that in 1892 he and his father had a dry-goods store in Keosauqua, and that "Newt" was courting a girl that lived near Mt. Sterling. Would like to know when and where he was married, and the name of his bride -- and if there are any living descendants of his family. Newt's parents were Joseph G. and Phoebe (Haines) Thompson -- formerly of Bonaparte. Thank you! Dotte Schneider Lake of the Ozarks

    2. Rich Lowe
    3. Thought I'd share with you another example of how we must always be sure to check for variations in spelling when looking for our ancestors. While proof reading the 1870 Village Twp census, the transcriber thought she saw "Daily". The AIS index says "Duly" so I did some further checking. I found this family in 1860 as "Dooley". Then found them again in 1880 as "Duley". So three consecutive census listings, three different spellings. 1. [IAVANBUR] 1870 Chequest Census
    2. Rich Lowe
    3. The 1870 Census transcription for Chequest township is now complete, and has been uploaded. Fran Hunt did the transcribing work and I proof read. We use several sources for proof reading, including referring back to 1860 and ahead to 1880 census for not only VBCo but when necessary we chase a family down who left the area to make sure we have it right. We also consult the AIS indexes, also another 1870 index I have on CD. At times, such things as marriage records, obits., etc. are also checked, so the process can be slow. However, I can tell you with confidence that our final transcription is **far superior** to the indexes that currently exist, as they contain many, many errors. Thanks again go to Fran Hunt for her work on Chequest Twp. She has just adopted her third 1870 township and is beginning work on Cedar township. You can find 1870 census links on all townships at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~iavanbur/1870census.htm Rich ___________________________________________________________ «¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»¥«¤»§«¤» Rich Lowe IAVanBuren@web-iowa.com Van Buren Co. 2. Rich Lowe
    3. I have placed online a new experimental "VBCo GenWeb Chat Room" for use by those with Van Buren Co. genealogical interests who wish to discuss the subject "live". If two individuals wish to meet each other in the Chat Room, they will need to arrange a time with each other in advance. Others, who have no specific meeting arranged, may want to join the Chat Room just for general discussion with anyone who happens to be there. Private chats may be held as well by following some simple instructions. I don't know if this is a tool that will be found useful, or not. However, being the computer geek that I am, thought I would toss it out for those on this list to experiment with. For the present, there is not a link from the main VBCo. page to this Chat Room feature, so you may want to add the following link to your favorites or save this message for future reference. See: http://www.rootsweb.com/~iavanbur/livechat.htm You will note it is supported by advertising, which while not especially welcome, does make the service free. I'll be interested in hearing from anyone who finds this tool useful.
