Dear Friends, July 1, 2011 began the new term for our IAGenWeb Leadership Team. State Coordinator is now Ralph Leonard and the Assistant State Coordinator is Stephen D. Williams. Sharon Becker and I are thećWelcome Hostesses. We have three beautiful Orphan Counties that need coordinators: LINN http://iagenweb.org/linn/ * MARION http://iagenweb.org/marion/ * and TAMA http://iagenweb.org/tama/ . It is not necessary to live in Iowa to be a county coordinator. The main duties of a coordinator include answering email requests for research assistance, providing newly transcribed information, and maintaining the site, mostly through minimizing broken links. We'd prefer a coordinator have at least basic knowledge of how to create web pages, either by writing their own code or using web design software, but this is not required to apply. Read more about the position at http://iagenweb.org/state/primer.htm . If you would like to adopt one of these counties, please drop us a line at welcome_to_iagenweb@iagenweb.org We would love hearing from you! Lynn McCleary Sharon R. Becker IAGenWeb Welcome Hostesses welcome_to_iagenweb@iagenweb.org
Do you have a love for genealogy? Do you enjoy helping others? If you have a knowledge on how to create web pages, then you may be just the person we're looking for to become a county coordinator! IAGenWeb is seeking coordinators for *GREENE*, *MARION*, *MILLS *, *LINN*, and *TAMA* counties. They can all be visited at http://iagenweb.org/state/colist.php . It's not necessary to live in Iowa to be a coordinator. To learn more about the position see http://iagenweb.org/state/primer.htm . Looking forward to hearing from you soon! I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the CROSBY Family. The first is a photograph of Horace & Adda CROSBY taken in the early 1900's with no studio or location identified. The couple appears to be in their 60's or 70's at the time the photograph was taken. The second photograph is identified as Hannah BALLARD CROSBY wife of Frank W. CROSBY. This photograph was taken at the Clara Ensminger Studio in Toledo, Iowa, likely sometime in the 1890's or early 1900's as well with Hannah appearing to be in her 70's at the time. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding the family: Horace Sidney CROSBY was b. 1841 in Royal Oaks, MI to parents Henry Sibley CROSBY (b. 24 Jul 1788 in Stillwater, NY) and Sarah Ann CAPRON (b. 7 Sep 1801 in Cortlandt, NY). Horace was one of 12 children born to this couple including, Francis William; Amos Leander; Dewitt Clinton; Mary Louisa; Newton Franklin; Corinthia Minerva; Caroline Frances; Robert Dale Owen; Spencer Sibley; Horace Sidney; Amarilia Lantha; and Arthur Welton CROSBY all born between 1823 and 1847. This was Henry's 2nd marriage, his first marriage was to Lydia Joanna WILKIE with whom he had 4 children including, William Wilkie; Cornelia Ann; Henry Willard; and Wilke Darrow CROSBY born between 1815 and 1822. Horace married Adda Almira or Elmira KINGDON b. 27 Jul 1851 in Cincinnati, OH, the daughter of Samuel Drew KINGDON and ? WONDERLAND on 20 Feb 1874 in Georgetown, CO. The couple had 5 children including, Alfred L.; Annie J.; Elsie Mabel; Florence E.; and Jessie Leonora CROSBY all born in CO between 1874 and 1888. Horace died 8 Jan 1920 or 1921 in Woodinville, WA and Adda on 4 or 5 Sept 1927 in Sequim, WA. Francis William CROSBY b. 23 Jul 1823 in Schenectady, NY married Hannah Everett BALLARD on 3 Apr 1849 in Decatur, OH. The couple had 6 children including, Mary Alice; Effie; William Otis; Robert Emmett; Frances Eunice; and Nellie Capron CROSBY all born in Decatur, OH and Toledo, IA between 1850 and 1861. Francis died 22 Dec 1909 and Hannah died in Washington DC on 30 Dec 1909. Hannah Everett BALLARD was b. 24 Feb 1822 or 1824 in Sparta, OH to parents Frederick BALLARD (b. 17 Jul 1780 in New London, NH) and Achsah EVERETT (b. 18 Feb 1784 in New London, CT). The couple had 10 children including Daniel; Appleton; Lydia; Allen; Eunice; Otis; Sally; Clarissa Baker; Penuel Everett; and Hannah Everett BALLARD all born between 1806 and 1822 or 1824 in Hartford, VT; Pomfret, VT; Franklin, VT; Wilmot, NH; Decatur, OH, and Sparta, OH. Census records provide the following information: 1900 census of Kanarra, UT: Horace S. CROSBY, b. MI, married 26 years Adda K. CROSBY, b. I received the latest issue of Family Tree Magazine today. Listed in the article "101 Best Free Websites for Tracing Your Roots" under "East of the Rockies" on page 21 is IowaGenWeb! "Though technically part of the USGenWeb network, this state site deserves an individual mention for its spiffy design, well-organized county information and especially its special projects. These include a family group sheet collection, gravestone photos, history book transcriptions, articles from old newspapers, state censuses and WPA graves registrations." Iowa and Oklahoma are the only two state sites singled out. The UsGenWeb is listed under "The Big Picture." Thank you to all who have contributed items to IAGenWeb. Your contributions have made it the great project it is today My Best To You All, Constance
Summer is on the way! It's a great time to get out and walk cemeteries, take photos of headstones, churches, historical sites, visit with county recorders and clerks, and transcribe records. All of the great information and photos you collect can find a home on an IAGenWeb county or project. So can you if you become a county coordinator. It's not necessary to live in Iowa to be a coordinator - just a love of Iowa's genealogy and the desire to help others. New coordinators are needed for *GREENE,* *LUCAS,* *MONROE,* *WEBSTER,* & *WAPELLO *counties. They can all be visited at http://iagenweb.org/state/colist.php .
