He attended school at St. Paul's Catholic School in Defiance. He received his brokerage license and worked for R. G. Dickenson in Carroll, and later operated his own office at the Dunlap Sale Barn in Dunlap. Feb. 7, 1949, he married Ardith Henkelman at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance. Eight children were born to this union. Following their marriage, the couple located on a farm near Defiance and remained there until 1970, when they moved into Defiance where he continued to farm, retiring in 1993. He was a lifetime member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance. Robert died Oct. 25, 2002, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital at age 72 years, 11 months and 14 days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ardith, and Stepbrother, Mal Schaben. He is survived by his children, Jim Schaben (Jackie) of Denison; Joe Schaben (Joyce) of Las Vegas, NV ; Kenny Schaben of Crete, NE; Bobby Schaben, Jr. (Ruth) of Harlan; Bill Schaben (Julia) of Defiance; Mary Ann (Tom) Sullivan of Dunlap; Frank Schaben of Lincoln, NE; John Schaben (Mary Jo) of Defiance; 26 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brothers and sister, Anthony Schaben, Jr. (Ella Mae) of Defiance; Ruth (Bob) Weis of Defiance; Edward Schaben (Rita) of Panama; step brothers and sisters, Bernard Schaben of Omaha, NE; Paul Schaben of Carroll; Mary Kay Campbell of Denison; Dan Schaben of Carroll; Rose Ditter of Columbia, MO; Mike Schaben of Defiance; Henry Schaben of Omaha, NE; and other relatives. A Mass of Christian Burial was concelebrated Oct. 28, 2002, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance, with Rev. Michael Berner celebrant and Rev. Howard Fitzgerald concelebrant. Burial was in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Defiance, with Jim Schaben, Bobby Schaben, Joe Schaben, Kenny Schaben, Bill Schaben, John Schaben and Mary Ann Sullivan casket bearers. Pauley Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
