Manilla, IA Times Thursday, July 9, 1998 Page 6 Bernadine Kenkel A Mass of Christian Burial for Bernadine Kenkel was held Friday, July 3, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Manilla, Iowa. Con-celebrants were Father Robert Gralapp, and Father Llody White. Lectors were Andrea Muff and Velma Pederson. Travis Muff gave the eulogy, Amy Kenkel, petitions. Music included "How Great Thou Art", "Gentle Woman", "Be Not Afraid", "On Eagles Wings" and "Amazing Grace". Melissa Muff was soloist, Sacred Heart Adult Choir and Marilyn Backhaus, organist. Gift bearers were Katie Sporrer, Gina Schmitz, Ashley Kenkel, Kayla Jewell, Jordan Kenkel, Madison Jewell and Paige Jewell. Eucharistic Ministers were Theresa Scheuring, Joe Moran, and Cyndie Salter. Mass servers were Troy Muff, Adam Sporrer, Todd Pontier. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Manilla, Iowa. Casket bearers were Travis Muff, Kyle Kenkel, Jeremy Kenkel, Jeff Schmitz, Ryan Pontier, Greg Schmitz, Chad Pontier, Cody Kenkel. Honorary casketbearers were the Helping Hand Club and Malinda Dammann. Prayers were held at Ohde Funeral Home, Thursday, July 2, 1998: 4:00 p.m. Rosary by Bernadine's sisters; 7:30 p.m. Prayer Service, Father Gralapp; 8:00 p.m., Rosary by Bernadine's sisters-in-law. Bernadine Margaret, daughter of John and Kunigunda Foxhoven Fuhs, was born January 5, 1928, in Portsmouth, Iowa. She attended school at St. Mary's Catholic School in Portsmouth. She then did housework for neighbors and friends. On September 1, 1948, Bernadine was united in marriage to Mark Kenkel in Portsmouth. Nine children were born to this union. Bernadine and Mark farmed near Portsmouth, and then Manilla, where they raised their children. In 1981 Mark retired and they moved into Manilla. As a member of Sacred Heart Church in Manilla, Bernadine enjoyed her membership in the Sacred Heart Alter and Rosary Society, as well as singing with Mark in the Sacred Heart Adult Choir. She also enjoyed sewing, crafts, gardening, and attending Helping Hand Club activities. On July 1, 1998, Bernadine died in her sleep at her home in Manilla, reaching the age of 70 years, five months, and 28 days. Besides her parents, Bernadine was preceded in death by a brother William Fuhs, and a granddaughter Allison Kenkel. She is survived by her husband, Mark Kenkel of Manilla; nine children: Cynthia and her husband Jim Salter of Moline, Illinois; Ronald Kenkel and his wife Jan of Oakland; Gloria and her husband Bob Muff of New Providence; Julia and her husband Bob Schmitz of Harlan; Marcia and her husband Art Pontier of Osceola; Sylvia and her husband Dave Sporrer of Templeton; Roger Kenkel and his wife Gail of Manilla; Rodney Kenkel and his wife Julie of Shenandoah; and Maria and her husband Vic Jewell of Fort Dodge; 21 grandchildren; four sisters: Mildred Goeser, Mary Kramer, Rita Schaben, and Pat Smith; two brothers: Bob and Joe Fuhs; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. submitted by Marthann Kohl [email protected]
