Harold Bensel of Harlan was pronounced dead at the scene after officers and Shelby County Sheriff deputies found his car engulfed in flames in the south ditch of 1200th Street northwest of Harlan. Police said a vehicle that appeared not to have slowed down knocked down the two stop signs at the intersection of Highways 44 and 59 in Harlan. Police said a Harlan Auto Mart employee found part of Bensel's bumper at the intersection. It is not known what caused Bensel to hit the signs. Jim Saunders, spokesperson for the Iowa Department of Public Safety, said fire investigators determined the car caught fire when nearby grass ignited as Bensel attempted to get it out of the ditch. = = = = = = ©The Harlan Tribune 12/01/2005 Harold Brensel Brensel, 86, Harlan, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2005.
