He went to a sanitarium at Independence, Mo., for treatment and operation last month, but he was not strong enough to recuperate from the effects of the surgeon’s knife, and death followed June 5, 1914. His son, Fred, was with him and brought the remains to his home for burial. Mr. Black was born Sept. 29, 1847, and was married to Miss Martha Roundy in the summer of 1872. To this union fourteen children were born, four having preceded him to the great beyond, three in infancy, and Effie, the eldest daughter. The remaining ten were present at the funeral, with the exception of his youngest daughter, Bell, who is ill at her home in Denver. The wife of his youth preceded him to the grave thirteen years ago, March 14. Mr. Black was nearly 65 years old at the time of his death, and was one of the charter members of the Gallands Grove branch of the Latter Day Saints Church. He lived a consistent christian life. He was one of the noble men of this locality, generous hearted, a peace maker, an honored father, a man who will be greatly missed for the world has been made better by his quiet unassuming life. His aged mother, now nearly ninety years old, lives in Denison, but was too feeble to attend the funeral, which was held at the church Monday afte! rnoon at two o’clock. Prayer was offered by Elder C.J. Hunt and Elder Chas. Derry, of Woodbine, preached the funeral sermon to a large congregation of relatives, neighbors and friends, who met to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed. The casket was covered with flowers, and was borne to its last resting place by six of his old neighbors and friends; Thomas Fowler, of Logan; Alfred Jackson, of Dow City; Lace Swain, of Woodbine; Bradley McCord, of Harlan, and Peter McIntosh and J.M. Pett, of the grove, to await the resurrection morn. He leaves to mourn his loss, his aged mother, two brothers, four sons, and six daughters, and several grandchildren, besides a host of friends. His children are Fred, Rena and Mrs. Bell Morgan, all of Denver; Mrs. Fred Poquet, of Hartington, Neb.; Curtis, of Logan; Mrs. W.L. Jackson, Harry, Mrs. James Reed, Mrs. Fred Baber and Clayton, all living in the Grove. This community extends sympathy to the bereaved in this their sad hour.
