Funeral services were held Monday, March 27 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Persia with Pastor Merlene Ostebee presiding. Casket bearers were Andrew Oloff, George Matthiessen, Joel Ruggles, William Oloff, Robert Matthiessen, Wesley Ruggles, Dustin Laver and Kolt Thomas. Interment was at Valley View Cemetery near Persia. Lillie, the daughter of Max and Anna Dreier Martens, was born March 21, 1905 west of Portsmouth in Cass Township of Harrison County. She was the second daughter in a family of five sons and three daughters. Two young brothers died in infancy. In 1910, the family moved two miles north of Persia living first in a log cabin that is now at the Shelby County Museum. In 1915 the family moved into the home they built that is now the Elven Steenbock home. Lillie was baptized May 7, 1905 and confirmed April 11, 1920 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Persia. She attended the Leland's Grove School. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Lillie was united in marriage Nov. 30, 1922 to Peter William Matthiessen at the home of her parents. The couple made their home near Persia. They were the parents of two children, Anna Maxine and Donald. In 1946 they moved to the Shelby area and in March 1952 William died. Lillie moved into Shelby where she lived until February 1988, when she! became a resident of the Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling. Her hands were never idle, as she did crochet and embroidery work on towels and pillowcases. She was a wealth of information, since she had lived so much of history. Besides her husband, Lillie was preceded in death by daughter Anna Maxine Oloff in 2002 and her brothers and sisters Harry, Walter, Raymond, Alice Kilgore and Verna Otto. Survivors include her son Rev. Donald Matthiessen and his wife Rosemary of Sterling, Ill.; six grandchildren Kathryn and her husband Wesley Ruggles of Persia, Karen Oloff of Portsmouth, William Oloff and his wife Yvette of Persia, George Matthiessen of Clovis, N.M., Robert Matthiessen of Sterling, Ill., and Amy Morrison and her husband James of Tarzania, Calif.; six great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. posted with permission from: Logan Herald-Observer Zach Ahrens, Publisher 107 N.
