The Past and Present of Shelby County, Iowa, pub. 1915, lists on page 414, L. J. NEFF of Walnut Iowa, listed as a beginning school teacher who later became an attorney. Page 420 of this same book indicates that John Neff also became a teacher, having earned his certificate at the Normal School in Shelby Co. The 1870 census of Illinois, as you probably already have, lists John Neff, 32, and wife Phebe Neff, age 26, with son James, age 2; and living next door are Phebe's (probably) parents John Crow, age 61, Maria Crow, age 60, and Mary, daughter, age 20.
