Jorge Hansen aka Jorge Lopez, 19, Kirkman, is in custody and charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault causing serious injury in connection with the death of Francisco Ruben Berrocal. Berrocal died as the result of a gunshot wound to the head early that morning, authorities said, at 1306 Woodland Ave., Kirkman. Hansen is accused of pointing the firearm at Berrocal in the basement of the residence and pulling the trigger. And according to search warrant records filed in the Shelby County Courthouse, Hansen allegedly admitted to the shooting. "During interview by deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office and agents from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Jorge Hansen admitted to shooting the 23-year-old male with a handgun," records said. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office was called to the scene at 2:15 a.m. Sunday morning. An unidentified female at the residence called authorities following the shooting incident. Once deputies arrived on the scene, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was called to assist the sheriff's office. The DCI continues to analyze evidence from the scene. State authorities helped to conduct interviews and collect evidence, officials said. Initial interviews and investigation concluded at about 11 a.m. that Sunday, but continue this week, officials said. Authorities have not ruled out other charges in the incident. The DCI Crime Lab was on the scene for several hours collecting various items as evidence and transporting them back to Des Moines for analysis. Authorities are awaiting ballistics and other evidence as well as the results of an autopsy, which was scheduled last Monday. The Shelby County Sheriff's Department executed a search warrant for a residence at 1306 Woodland Ave., shown in public records to be owned by Stephen L. Hansen, Jorge Hansen's father. Although officials have not released many details about the shooting, search warrant records indicate Hansen aka Lopez had allegedly ran from the residence after the shooting. Deputies allegedly located him west of the residence near several out buildings. In addition, a weapon was recovered under a mattress in an upstairs bedroom. Witnesses at the scene apparently told authorities where the gun was located. Several other weapons also were recovered from the residence. Search warrant records also say deputies discovered a quantity of controlled substances, paraphernalia and alcohol, although officials said they are awaiting crime lab results before they determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the shooting. Upon execution of the search warrant, officers seized a number of items as evidence including a bullet, cartridges, cartridge cases, a box of ammunition, a fanny pack and pouch, scale, bongs and a gun. Authorities also obtained a search warrant requesting body specimens including blood and urine from Hansen aka Lopez. Law enforcement also searched a Defiance home last week as a result of information gleaned from the investigation, although nothing was seized from the search. As of Friday, Hansen was being held in the Shelby County Jail on $50,000 bond. An initial appearance was scheduled for Friday. If convicted of the class "D" felony charges against him, Hansen faces up to 10 years in jail with additional fines totaling $10,000. Hansen has had another brush with the law during the past year. He pleaded guilty June 25 to assault causing bodily injury in an incident where he was accused of punching a 16-year-old male in the face several times in April, 2005. He was granted a deferred judgment and placed on one year of unsupervised probation on the misdemeanor charge. He was ordered to write a letter of apology to the victim and make restitituion for costs and attorney fees. Hansen is a senior student at Harlan Community High School. He is scheduled to graduate with his class Sunday, May 14 in ceremonies at the high school.
