MANILLA -- Phyllis J. McCone, 81, Manilla, died April 27. Services were held Monday, May 1 at 10:30 a.m. at United Church of Manilla with burial in the Nishnabotna Cemetery near Manilla. She moved with her family to Manning when she was in the 5th grade. Phyllis graduated as an honor student from Manning High School in 1942. On June 22, 1942, Phyllis was united in marriage with Dale Dean McCone at Omaha, Nebraska. Three children were born to this union. They made their home near Botna where they started their family and raised purebred cattle. In 1954 they moved to their own farm west of Manilla. Phyllis was active in various school organizations. She was the 1960 Iowa Shorthorn Lassie’s President. She loved singing and was a faithful member of the church choir. Phyllis helped to serve many church luncheons throughout her life. Phyllis and Dale welcomed many people into their home, and all were treated to her wonderful home cooking. The grandchildren loved to go to Grandma’s house. They knew she would spoil them. Phyllis loved each grandchild in a very special way! Following the death of her husband, Phyllis remained in her own home. She had some of her own health challenges but faced them with incredible strength. Phyllis went home to be in the presence of the Lord on April 27, 2006, at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 11 days. Preceding Phyllis in death are her parents and husband Dale McCone in 2005. She is survived by three children: Pam and husband Gary Hall of Manilla; Stanley McCone and wife Virginia of Sanborn, Minnesota; and Patti and husband Dan Muhlbauer of Manilla; 15 grandchildren: Ann and husband David Getting; Dawn and husband Doug VanderWeide; Alan Hall and wife Michele; Nancy Hall; Susan and husband Will Manda; Katie Hall; Steven Hall; Christy and husband Chad Heckathorn; Benton McCone; Charles McCone and wife Heidi; Steven McCone; Tom McCone; Beth Carter; David Muhlbauer; and Megan Muhlbauer; 15 great-grandchildren: Josh and Zach Getting; Emma, Grace and Jack VanderWeide; Derek, Luke, Ashley and Aidan Hall; Gary Manda; Mariah and Jack Heckathorn; Maddie and Lilly McCone; and Brody Carter; sisters Jean Kuhn of Sioux Falls, SD, and Marvel Jones of Council Bluffs; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Phyllis told her family, “For my obituary…write… I lived and I died!”
