Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home, Harlan, is in charge of arrangements. = = = = = = Eunice Marian Kolb December 24, 1906 - September 10, 2005 Eunice Marian Kolb, the daughter of William and Addie (Clark) Kolb, was born on December 24, 1906, in Clay Township, Shelby County, Iowa. She attended Clay #3 School and graduated from Elk Horn (Iowa) High School with the class of 1926. After graduation, Eunice attended Methodist College of Nursing in Omaha, Nebraska, graduating with the class of 1930. She did private nursing in Omaha for a short time before moving to Wahoo, Nebraska, where she again worked as a nurse. In December, 1945, Eunice moved to Los Angeles, California, where she continued her nursing career. In December, 1971, Eunice retired. She remained in Los Angeles until October, 1997, when failing eyesight forced her to enter the Villa Scalabrini Retirement Home in Sun Valley, California. Eunice M. Kolb died on Saturday, September 10, 2005, at the Villa Special Care Unit in Sun Valley, California, at the age of 98 years, 8 months, and 17 days. Preceding Eunice in death were her parents; three brothers, Gordon Kolb, Lewis Kolb, and Charles Kolb; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Kolb and Elvie Kolb; and one nephew, Warren Kolb. Survivors include one nephew, Larry (Janice) Kolb of North Hills, California; several great-nieces and nephews; and several great-great-nieces and nephews. Graveside services and burial were held on Saturday, September 17, 2005, at Monroe Township Cemetery in rural Shelby County, Iowa, with Rev. David Swinton of the Monroe Chapel officiating. Mickelson July 10, 1915 - September 2, 2005 Howard Gail Mickelson, the son of Carl M. and Mary Ethel (Reynolds) Mickelson, was born on July 10, 1915, in rural Irwin, Iowa. He attended Irwin Consolidated School and graduated in 1932. He then worked as a farmhand until May 8, 1941, when he entered the Army and was a member of the 1759th Combat Engineers. After his discharge in 1946, Howard became a school bus driver and worked at Til McMahon’s Garage. On January 8, 1949, Howard married Dolores Beatrice Wiig at the Lutheran parsonage in Irwin. In October, 1949, the couple moved to his parents’ farm; they lived there 56 years. Howard joined the Irwin Church of Christ in Irwin, at the age of 21, and had served as a church elder for many years. Each April, he attended the Kiamichi Mountains Christian Men’s Meeting in Oklahoma. In 1976, Howard started the Greenridge Steam and Gas Engine Antique Show at the Mickelson Farm. He had restored a 1915 Case Steam Engine and built a half-scale Rumley Traction Engine. Howard G. Mickelson died on Friday, September 2, 2005, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 90 years, 1 month, and 23 days. Preceding Howard in death were his parents and two brothers, Normal Mickelson and Ralph Mickelson. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Dolores Mickelson of Harlan, Iowa; one daughter, Mary (Clark) Ahrenholtz of Harlan, Iowa; one son, Danny Mickelson of Irwin, Iowa; six grandchildren, Tabitha Ahrenholtz, Camilla Ahrenholtz, Casie (Toby) Muller, Kristopher (Amie) Mickelson, Andrea Mickelson, and Dani Dee Mickelson; one great-grandchild, Dawson Muller; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Monday, September 5, 2005, at the Irwin Church of Christ in Irwin, Iowa, with Pastor Ted Sieck officiating. Peggy Ahrenholtz served as organist, and Allen Birks was the soloist. Casket bearers were Kristopher Mickelson, Ken Nielsen, Toby Muller, Jeff Darling, Jerry Nelson, and Sheldon Kallevig. Military rites were provided by the Helmer Reyelt A.L. Post #150 and the Shelby County VFW Post #941. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Irwin, Iowa. Peters January 19, 1928 - August 31, 2005 Richard Howard Peters, the son of Ernest and Mildred (Sinison) Peters, was born on January 19, 1928, in rural Tennant, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed as a member of the Shelby Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa. Richard attended Tennant Consolidated School and graduated from high school in 1946. Together with his brother, Harold, he began farming his parents’ land in 1947. On May 12, 1951, Richard married Pola Ann Ericksen at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. The couple continued to live on and farm the family land, where Richard raised dairy cattle and hogs in addition to his grain crops. Richard served in the Army Reserves from 1951 through 1959, retiring with the rank of Sergeant First Class. In 1966, Richard and Pola purchased a 200 acre farm northwest of Avoca, Iowa, from his great-uncle, Arthur Nissen. In 1970, they moved into their newly built home on this land and later, added sheds, buildings, and granaries to their farmstead. For his efforts, Richard received the Farm Conservation Award in 1976. Richard was a member of the United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa. He had served as a Shelby-Tennant Community School board member for six years. He enjoyed making wooden and metal crafts, dancing, golfing, and traveling. Over the past few years, he completed a number of colorful paint-by-number pictures, and gave many of them to his children and grandchildren. Richard H. Peters died on Wednesday, August 31, 2005, at his home in rural Shelby, Iowa, at the age of 77 years, 7 months, and 12 days. Preceding Richard in death were his parents and one sister, Pearl Knudsen. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Pola Peters of Shelby, Iowa; four daughters, Carol Brigandi and Judy Peters, both of Omaha, Nebraska, Becky (Richard) Udron of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Rita (Kevin) Epperson of Council Bluffs, Iowa; one son, Steven (Joyce) Peters of Humboldt, Iowa; two brothers, Harold Peters and Eugene (Naomi) Peters, both of Tennant, Iowa; one aunt, Pearl (Leslie) West of Simla, Colorado; ten grandchildren, Kyla Peters, Dylan Peters, Sarah Peters, and Kelsey Peters, all of Humboldt, Iowa, Katie Udron and Sara Udron, both of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Heath Epperson, Brett Epperson, Ryan Epperson, and Amy Jo Epperson, all of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and other relatives and friends. Casket bearers were Adam Bruck, Richard Bruck, Justin Leonard, Jenna Leonard, Peggy Cole, Keith Bruck, Nathan Leonard and Ashley McDonald. Military rites were conducted by the Nebraska Military Honors Team at Anderson Grove Presbyterian Cemetery in Bellevue, Neb. with clergy Dr. Joe Scahill. Alfred was born July 24, 1927 at Redfield, S.D. He attended school at Redfield, S.D. He and his family moved to Bartlett, Iowa where he finished grade school and graduated high school as valedictorian. Following graduation, Alfred helped his parents on the farm. He joined the HQ and HQ Co. 168th Infantry National Guard in Council Bluffs in 1949. Alfred was stationed at Fort Mammoth, N.J. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Bartlett to ! farm. On June 14, 1953, Alfred was united in marriage to Bernice Ruth Petersen at Anderson Grove Church in Fort Crook, Neb. The couple moved to Fort Crook after living in an apartment in Omaha for six months. Four children were born to this union: Elaine, Leo, Donald, and Char. They lived in Fort Crook where Alfred farmed for nine years. In 1962, they purchased a farm and relocated to Portsmouth, where they farmed until retiring in 1988. Alfred worked at local golf courses and then in 1991, moved to Harlan. He became a resident of Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn in February of 2003. Alfred was a member of the Anderson Grove Presbyterian Church in Fort Crook, Neb. and the Farm Bureau. Survivors include his wife, Bernice Leonard of Harlan; children Elaine and her husband Roger Bruck of Persia, Leo Leonard and his wife Denise of Waterloo, Char and her husband Denny Arkfeld of Defiance; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two step great-grandc! hildren; sister Adelaide Hendrickson of Omaha, Neb; other relatives an d many friends. She is survived by daughters, Bernice Baldauf and husband Ralf of Omaha, Mildred Miller and husband Bob of Atlantic, Ia., Mary Jane Peterson and husband Keith of Shelby, Ia., Eileen Killpack and husband Frank of Neola, Ia., and daughter-in-law Marlene Johnson of Persia, Ia.; 25 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and 14 great, great-grandchildren. Open visitation is at Pauley Jones Funeral Home, Harlan, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, September 1. Family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Prayer service at 7 p.m. Services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, September 2 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Persia, Ia., with Pastor Duane Annunson officiating. Burial is Sept. 2 at Valley View Cemetery, Persia, Ia.

Kramer Kelly Lynn Kramer, daughter of Dean and Kate (Starman) Kramer, was born on April 15, 1977 at Tilden, NE. She was baptized and confirmed at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Petersburg. She attended school at Petersburg Public School and graduated in 1995. Kelly attended Wayne State College and graduated in December of 1999. During her time at Wayne, she was a member of STRIDE, the Newman Club, and she did work-study at the campus library. Kelly lived in Fremont where she worked at Pre-Schools and Daycare in Fremont and Omaha. She returned to Petersburg in August of 2002. She worked as a substitute para-educator at Boone Central Elementary School and Jr. High. Kelly was a member of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Petersburg. On Tuesday, August 30, 2005 Kelly passed away after a lengthy illness at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion at 28 years of age. She is survived by her parents: Dean and Kate Kramer of Petersburg; 2 sisters and 1 brother: Karrie Kramer of Kenesaw; Dustin Kramer of Omaha; and Kendra Ranslem and husband Brad of Gibbon; 1 nephew Keaton Ranslem; along with aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Kelly was preceded in death by her grandparents: Lawrence and Loretta Starman; Frank and Adeline Kramer, and uncles Duane Kramer and Bobby Starman. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 2, 2005 at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Fr. Stan Schmitz officiating. Burial will be at the parish cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the church with a 7:30 p.m. Wake Service. Visitation will resume at 9:00 a.m. on Friday morning until service time at the church.
