Lillian devoted her life to taking care of people. She was a member of Baptist Church, and a very active member in her church. She graduated from Inwood (Iowa) High School in 1947. On February 14, 1949, Bertha married Donald Glenn Roos in Inwood. After their marriage, the couple farmed in Iowa and Minnesota. For many years, Bertha was a foster parent and was employed as a school cook in the Johnston, Iowa, public schools. Before moving to Harlan in December, 2001, Bertha and Don lived in Spring Valley and Eyota, Minnesota, Des Moines, Johnston, and Grimes, Iowa, and Bella Vista and Bentonville, Arkansas. Bertha was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan. She enjoyed reading, painting Don’s woodcrafts, and acquiring collectables. Bertha J. Roos died on Sunday, October 2, 2005, at her home in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 76 years, 5 months, and 28 days. Preceding Bertha in death were her parents and one sister, Kathleen TerMeer. Survivors include her husband, Donald Roos of Harlan, Iowa; one daughter, Cathy Johnson of Harlan, Iowa; one son, Timothy (Pam) Roos of Conyers, Georgia; two sisters, Hermina Kooima of Coopersville, Michigan, and Mable (John) VanDenTop of Rock Valley, Iowa; two brothers, Opie C. Duane Edward Sieck was born on a farm near Elk Horn, Iowa on December 29, 1932 the son of Henry E. Sieck and Ida (Gundy) Sieck. He lived in the Elk Horn area graduating from the Elk Horn High School in 1951. He attended the Nebraska State Trade School in Milford, NE for two years learning auto mechanics. Duane worked as a mechanic in Atlantic for many years and farmed with his Dad until his health deteriorated. He became a resident of the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in 2001. Duane was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic and a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a very active member until his health failed. He is survived by a brother Jerry Sieck of Atlantic, a sister Donna Wheatley and her husband Wayne of Walnut, Iowa and a sister Joann Ritz and her husband Richard of Basye, Virginia; nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Duane was preceeded in death by his parents, Henry and Ida; three brothers Richard, Henry, Jr. and an infant brother and one sister Marilyn Sieck. A funeral mass for Duane will be held Monday, September 26, at 10:00 A.M. at the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with interment in the Atlantic Catholic Cemetery. A rosary will be held Sunday evening at 6:00 P.M. at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic with a visitation following from 7:00 to 8:00. There will be a lunch at the Catholic Parish Center following the burial on Monday. The Roland Funeral Home is caring for Duane’s family and the arrangements.

Marjorie was born, April 17, 1915, the daughter of John Garfield and Ruth (Herbert) Stevenson in Shelby County in Iowa. They moved to Pymosa Township in Cass County when she was two years old and was a resident of Cass County the rest of her life. She attended rural school and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1932. She was a member of the Eldeen 4-H Club for eight years, including being Cass County president one year. She taught school six years at Pymosa No. 4. Marjorie was married to Johnnie H. Westphalen May 21, 1939 at her folks’ (Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Stevenson) home north of Atlantic. Marjorie and Johnnie were blessed with two sons and farmed north of Atlantic for 40 years. She enjoyed being a farm homemaker and joined the family, choring until they retired in 1977. In 1980 they moved into the Country Green Condos in Atlantic. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Atlantic and the ZA-GA-ZIG Shrine Auxiliary (in which she was a past president and 50 year member of the Eastern Star). In recent years, she was a volunteer in the Cass County Hospital Auxiliary. Marjorie will be remembered for her kind and personable ways. Her children appreciate how their mother was always interested in their friends and put forth an effort to become acquainted with them. She is survived by her son, Daryl Westphalen and his wife, Luanne of Des Moines; a grandson, Bret Westphalen and his wife, Christin of Richmond, Virginia; granddaughters, Amy Urbanus and her husband, Jeff of Anchorage, Alaska and Amanda Westphalen of Turlock, California; great granddaughters, Erin and Emma Westphalen of Richmond, Virginia; her sisters, Gretchen Sanny of Atlantic and Ruth Alyce Mayberry and her husband, Irwin of Northridge, California; and her many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie, in 1999, her son, Don Westphalen, in 1994; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Pearl and Vernon Sien, Leo and Ethel Westphalen, Arnold and Erma Westphalen, Ruby and Dean Prall, and Clarence Sanny; and her infant, great granddaughter, Megan Urbanus. A funeral Service is set for 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 23, 2005 at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa. Pastor Terry Schoenfeld, of the Evangelical Free Church in Atlantic, will officiate and the committal will be in the Atlantic Cemetery in Atlantic. The family will meet with friends at a visitation to be held on Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. There will be a luncheon back at the funeral home following the interment. Roland Funeral Home is caring for Marjorie’s family and the arrangements.

He was raised on a farm located near Tennant, Iowa. Eugene graduated from Tennant High School with the class of 1932. On September 25, 1936, Eugene married Alice Norma Buckman in Rock Port, Missouri, and the couple made their home in Harlan. In 1941, Eugene began trucking with his own truck. From 1954-1964, he worked as a salesman, first for Squeeler Feeds in Harlan, and later for Peets Feed of Council Bluffs, Iowa. He received sales awards each year from 1968-1974. Eugene also sold seed corn for McCurdy and Cargill. He retired from sales in 1980. Eugene was a member of Christ’s Church in Harlan, Iowa. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and traveling to visit family and friends. He had served as a volunteer fireman in Harlan and as a member of the Shelby County Fair Association. Eugene D. Wilcox died on Saturday, September 24, 2005, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 91 years, 11 months, and 10 days. Preceding Eugene in death were his parents; his wife, Alice Norma Buckman, in Harlan, Iowa, on April 13, 1971; two sisters, Alice Lyon and Velma Sorensen; and two brothers, Virgil Wilcox and Gordon Wilcox. Survivors include his special friend, Eleanor Graves of Harlan, Iowa; one daughter, Janice Bradley of Des Moines, Iowa; three sons, Richard (Mildred) Wilcox of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Gary (Anne) Wilcox of Mission Viejo, California, and Norman (Mary Ellen) Wilcox of Grayson, Georgia; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 28, 2005, at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Larry Fiscus of Christ’s Church in Harlan officiating. Casket bearers were Eddie Roos, Tim Klein, Dean Junker, Richard Joy, Ed Logan, and Jerry Kelley. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of the arrangements.

The family moved to Dunlap in 1945. Larry graduated from Dunlap High School in 1955. He worked at the M & S Garage for a short time and then joined the US Navy. Following his father’s death in 1959, Larry was given a hardship discharge from the Navy to come home and farm the family farm, which he later purchased. On January 19, 1963, Larry married Margaret Wilwerding at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Larry worked as a bartender at the Gold Slipper for a short time, he worked in the M & S Body shop and continued to farm. In 1965 he went to work for the Post Office first in Dunlap then in Omaha, Council Bluffs, Missouri Valley and finally in Woodbine. He retired from his mail route in Woodbine in 2002. Larry then went to work for the Boyer Valley School District as a groundskeeper and bus driver while continuing to oversee the f! arming operation. Larry was baptized in the Lutheran Church. He later on became a faithful member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dunlap. He was a member of the Dunlap American Legion Post #224. He played taps for the military services. Larry spent many years assisting with the Boyer Valley sporting events. Larry died on Friday, September 23, 2005 at the Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 68 years, three months and 20 days. Larry was preceded in death by his father and a brother Marvin. He is survived by his wife Margie of Dunlap, Iowa; two sons John Peyton Emswiler II of Denison, Iowa and Jeffrey Emswiler and his wife Karen of Norwalk, Iowa; three grandchildren Alexandra, Colton and Brady Emswiler; mother Dorothy Emswiler of Woodbine, Iowa; brother Ken Emswiler of Omaha, Nebraska; sister-in-law Sandra Emswiler of Omaha, Nebraska; brother-in-law Ron Wilwerding and his wife Donna of Fort Dodge, Iowa and many other relatives and friends. She attended school southwest of Walnut and worked as a waitress in Walnut. It was during this time she met her husband, Earle Otto Schnack, and the couple married on February 19, 1934 in Harlan, Iowa. They lived on a farm located southeast of Harlan until 1937, when they moved into Harlan. In 1946, Earle started the Schnack Electric business. Lucille helped Earle in the business until his retirement in 1974, and continued to work for her son until 1989, when they sold the business. Earle died on November 21, 1984, in Harlan. Lucille then lived in the Schnack Electric building, which had been remodeled into apartments. She later moved to the Westridge Apartments, and remained there until poor health caused her to become a resident of the Elm Crest Retirement Community. Lucille was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa, on November 23, 1941, and had been a member since that time. She liked travel to Denison, Iowa, to play Bingo. Lucille put much effort into promoting the new Harlan Senior Center and enjoyed going there for activities. Lucille I. Schnack died on Wednesday, September 21, 2005, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 89 years, 11 months, and 24 days. Preceding Lucille in death were her parents; her husband, Earle Schnack; one brother, Raymond Burgin; and one son, Craig Schnack, in 2003. Survivors include two sons, Gail (Marilyn) Schnack of Harlan, Iowa, and Gordon (Irene) Schnack of Omaha, Nebraska; one sister-in-law, Elaine Andersen of Kimballton, Iowa; nine grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 24, 2005, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Heather Ploen officiating. Marge Ahrenholtz served as the organist, and Diane Kastens was the soloist. Casket bearers were Joshua Schnack, Kyle Schnack, Travis Schnack, Jeff Schnack, Troy Schnack, Doug Schnack, David Schnack, Kathy Stanton, and Sherrie Schnack. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of the arrangements.
