Crawford County authorities said Richard Clement Grote, 72, of Dunlap was turning left onto a farm drive from Highway 30 at about 6 p.m. when he was clipped by a semi tractor. The truck, driven by John Miner, 62, of Emerson, Iowa, tried to pass Grote's tractor and hit it. Both vehicles ended up in a ditch. Miner and his passenger, John Miner Jr., 40, of Glidden, Iowa, were taken to Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. There was no condition report provided on the men. = = = = = = = = Dunlap farmer killed in collision ©Daily Nonpareil 10/21/2005 DUNLAP - A 72-year-old Dunlap farmer was killed late Thursday afternoon when a semi-tractor trailer attempting to pass his tractor struck the vehicle. According to the Iowa State Patrol, Richard Grote was eastbound on U.S. Highway 30 about one mile east of Dunlap attempting to turn left into his driveway at the same time the semi, driven by John Miner, 62, of Emerson attempted to pass. Both vehicles left the road and went into a ditch. The patrol did not have information as to whether Grote's turn indicator was on. Grote, Miner and his son, John Miner Jr., 40, of Glidden, who was a passenger, were transported by ambulance to Crawford County Memorial Hospital. A hospital spokesperson said Grote was pronounced dead on arrival. John Miner Sr. was admitted and John Miner Jr. was treated and released.
