Harold Bensel of Harlan was pronounced dead at the scene after officers and Shelby County Sheriff deputies found his car engulfed in flames in the south ditch of 1200th Street northwest of Harlan. Police said a vehicle that appeared not to have slowed down knocked down the two stop signs at the intersection of Highways 44 and 59 in Harlan. Police said a Harlan Auto Mart employee found part of Bensel's bumper at the intersection. It is not known what caused Bensel to hit the signs. Jim Saunders, spokesperson for the Iowa Department of Public Safety, said fire investigators determined the car caught fire when nearby grass ignited as Bensel attempted to get it out of the ditch. = = = = = = ©The Harlan Tribune 12/01/2005 Harold Brensel Brensel, 86, Harlan, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2005. Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/zk.2ADI/2046 Message Board Post: ©Daily Nonpareil 11/16/2005 There's snow escape from winter's arrival CHAD NATION, TOM McMAHON AND PHIL ROONEY, Staff Writers Two people died in an accident near Harlan on Tuesday as the season's first snowfall made for treacherous morning and evening commutes and sent cars and trucks sliding into ditches and each other as more than a dozen accidents were reported. A two-car collision on an icy Shelby County road killed two women and left a Harlan man in critical condition. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office said the women, whose names have not been released, were passengers in a car driven by Roger Page, 59, of Harlan. According to the sheriff's office, Page was southbound on Highway 59 about a half mile south of County Road F32 around 6:45 p.m. when he lost control of his vehicle and crossed the centerline. Page's car collided with a northbound car driven by Phillip Nielsen, 52, of Kirkman. Nielsen was unable to avoid Page's vehicle on the 100 percent ice-covered road and crashed into the passenger door, the sheriff's office said. Page was taken to Myrtue Community Hospital in Harlan and later life-flighted to the Nebraska Medical Center where he was reported in critical condition, according to the sheriff's office. The medical center was not releasing a report this morning. The sheriff's office said Nielsen was treated and released in Harlan. The accident remains under investigation. Tuesday morning produced only a few fender benders, but as temperatures dropped and snow kept falling, evening drivers found more dangerous conditions. Between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Council Bluffs police were called to eight accidents that were directly related to the slick roads. Interstate overpasses were especially hazardous. One accident involving minor injuries occurred near Nebraska Avenue and I-29. A Chevy S-10 driven by Jennifer Kauble, 28, of Council Bluffs, was northbound on the interstate at 6:30 p.m., when she lost control of her vehicle due to icy conditions. According to reports, James Welch, 39, also of Council Bluffs, was southbound in a Chevy Prism on Nebraska Avenue when Kauble's truck struck his car head-on. Council Bluffs Fire and Rescue transported Welch to Jennie Edmundson Hospital, where he was treated and released. Kauble's vehicle sustained $5,000 of damage, and Welch's had $7,000. A single-vehicle accident happened about the same time near the West Broadway overpass. At 6:35, a Dodge Dakota driven by Christopher Weaver, 23, of Crescent, was northbound on I-29. Reports state he lost control due to icy conditions when his vehicle reached the bridge. The truck spun out of control and rolled into the median, where it came to rest on its roof. Weaver was wearing his seat belt and was uninjured. The truck sustained $5,000 in damage. Rural roads and highways also saw their share of accidents on Tuesday. Cpl. Dwayne Riche said the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Department responded to numerous afternoon accidents. "The roads started to ice over at about 3:30," Riche said. "From then on, our road officers were going from call to call." Accident reports came in from across the county and dozens of cars that slid into ditches went unreported. Riche said at least three accidents sent people to Alegent Health Mercy Hospital but no fatalities were reported. Riche said that Highway 6 was "still not in that good of shape," this morning. There were reports of more than 4 inches of snow in the Council Bluffs area from Tuesday's storm. Snow could make a brief appearance on Thursday, but winter was expected to back off in favor of a week of more comfortable temperatures, but not until cold and wind had battered Council Bluffs and the surrounding area for another day. Forecaster Cathy Zapotocny with the National Weather Service in Valley, Neb., said .8 inches fell at the weather service offices and 3.5 inches of snow fell in Pacific Junction. Harlan reported 2.6 inches of snow and more than 2 inches of snow was reported near Eppley Airfield. Zapotocny said today's high will be around 32 degrees and this morning's single-digit wind chills were expected to warm into the teens by this afternoon before dropping back into single digits overnight. Afternoon wind gusts were expected to be in the 10 to 20 mph range. "We actually have a little system coming through Thursday," she said. That was expected to bring the possibility of flurries with highs moving into the mid-40s to the lower 50s through Monday. = = = = = = = = = ©Daily Nonpareil - Tom McMahon 11/17/2005 Two victims of deadly crash identified HARLAN - The two women killed in a Tuesday evening car crash on Highway 59 north of Harlan have been identified as Elizabeth Page, 19, and Stephanie Nash, 20, both of Harlan. The women were passengers in a vehicle driven by Page's father, Roger, 59, also of Harlan. His car crossed the centerline under icy road conditions about 6:45 p.m. and collided with a car driven by Phillip Nielsen, 52, of Kirkman. According to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, Kirkman was unable to avoid the Page vehicle and crashed into the passenger door. Nielsen was treated and released following the accident. Roger Page was life-flighted to the Nebraska Medical Center and remains in critical condition as of this morning. The accident happened about a half-mile south of County Road F-32. Elizabeth A. Page, 19, and Stephanie N. Nash, 20, both of Harlan, were killed when the car in which they were riding collided with a vehicle on Highway 59 near County Road F32 about three miles north of Harlan. Page and Nash were passengers in a Chevy Beretta driven by Roger Page, 59, Harlan. The accident occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. According to Shelby County Sheriff reports, the Page vehicle was southbound on Highway 59 when the vehicle veered out of control and crossed the center line. Reports said the road was 100 percent ice covered at the time of the collision. The Page vehicle was then struck by a Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Phillip Nielsen, 52, Kirkman, which was northbound on Highway 59. Reports said the Nielsen vehicle was unable to avoid the collision and struck the Page vehicle in the passenger door. Called to the scene was the state patrol, sheriff's office, Medivac Ambulance/Rescue, and fire departments from Harlan, Kirkman, Earling and Westphalia. Roger Page was transported to Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan and then to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. He was listed in critical condition.
