A Taste of Italy Defiance Style will be held, with proceeds from the fund-raiser utilized to help start purchasing souvenirs, cookbooks and other items needed to promote the community's centennial. The 125th anniverary of Defiance celebration will be held over Labor Day weekend, September 1-2, 2007. Committee members said the Feb. 11 fund-raiser should be a fun event. "We'll get started at 6 p.m. with a wine and ale tasting event, sponsored by the Harlan Hy-Vee," said Brenda Kloewer, co-chairperson of the fund-raising committee. "That will last from 6-7:30 p.m., and then we'll have at 7:30 p.m. a traditional Italian meal." The evening will conclude with a small auction at 9 p.m., and socializing and mingling with music after the auction. "We want to begin promoting and making people aware of the celebration," said Kloewer. The goal is to sell 300 tickets, which can be purchased in advance at Tobe's Place, Brenda's Country Store and Defiance State Bank. Persons also can purchase tickets by calling 712-236-1031. Because of the alcohol at the event, persons must be 21 years old to attend.
