She was born on a farm in Crawford County, Iowa, to Karl and Frieda Rath Jedele, the fourth of eight children. She became a child of God on October 8, 1919, through the Sacrament of Baptism, and confirmed her faith in Jesus Christ in March of 1932 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Her memory verse was from Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Aletha attended Zion Lutheran School for eight years and graduated from Denison High School in 1936. After graduation she went to work in the County Superintendent of Schools office, taught grades 1-4 at Zion Lutheran School for two years, and returned to the County Superintendent’s office from 1939 until 1945 when her husband returned from the war. Aletha married Russell Nelson of Irwin, Iowa, on October 19, 1941. Two children were born to Russ and Leth, Colleen Classen of Utica, Nebraska, and James Nelson of Creston, Iowa. They farmed near Irwin from 1945 to 1962. Russell then went into carpentry and Aletha worked at the ASCS office in Harlan, Iowa, for 23 years, enjoying her office work involving the farm programs. After Aletha retired from the ASCS office at age 66, she learned to do hand-punch brailling and later with a manual machine. She went on to become certified by the US Library of Congress and volunteered for Lutheran Braille Workers Inc for more than 10 years. Working for the Lord in whatever capacities she could was of the greatest importance to Aletha her whole life, from holding offices at church to helping clean the church. She also enjoyed her involvement with the Irwin Keenagers, the SW Iowa Agency on Aging, and quilting with the ladies at the Senior Center and at church. She entered the nursing home in Friend, Nebraska, in August of 2001 where her daughter works. She and Colleen enjoyed many hours together over the next several years. Aletha is survived by her daughter, Colleen (Tim) Classen, son, James (Cindy) Nelson, four granddaughters, Amy (William) Leonard of Las Vegas, Nevada, Nicole Classen of Burbank, California, Angela (Jason) Muldoon of Bloomfield, Iowa, and Andrea (Andrew) Cressman of Pasadena, Maryland, and five great grandchildren, Justin, Jessa and Jacklyn Muldoon and Keegan and Kendall Leonard. B. F. BOWEN & COMPANY, Inc. Indianapolis, Indiana pages 1421-1422 ELI L. WYCOFF Practical industry, wisely and vigorously applied, never fails of success. It carries a man onward and upward, brings out his individual character and acts as a powerful stimulus to the efforts of others. The greatest results in life are often attained by simple means and the exercise of the ordinary qualities of common sense and perseverance. The every-day life, with its cares, necessities, and duties, affords ample opportunities for acquiring experience of the best kind and its most beaten paths provide a true worker with abundant scope for effort and improvement. Eli L. WYCOFF, a prosperous farmer of Jefferson township, Shelby County, Iowa, was born October 21, 1871, in Peoria County, Illinois, the son of Carlos Cushman and Virginia (SLYGH) Wycoff, married February 1, 1871. Carlos Wycoff was born December 13, 1848 at Elmwood, Illinois, and is the son of George T. and Mary (CUSHMAN) Wycoff, natives of New Jersey and Vermont, respectively. The Wycoffs are of German extraction, while the Cushmans are of English descent, and came to this country with the Pilgrims on the Mayflower. Carlos C. Wycoff was one of the early settlers of Illinois, and in 1891 came to Shelby County, Iowa, where he located in the eastern part of Jefferson Township, on the county line, and here he lived for five years, at the end of which time he purchased three hundred and twenty acres of land in section 12, of the same township, where he lived to the time of his death, July 5, 1914. Carlos Wycoff and wife were the parents of six children, Eli L., whose histor! y is here presented; Leonard D., Mrs. Mary E. Gordon, Stephen C., John D. deceased, and Mrs. Ollie Stoker. Mrs. Wycoff, mother of the subject, is still living on the home place. Eli L. Wycoff received his education in the schools of his native county in Illinois, and also in Shelby County, Iowa. He was nineteen years of age when his parents came to this county from Illinois and attended school for some time after coming to this county. He remained at home until he was married, since which time he has rented and farmed on various farms in this township. In 1909 he bought forty acres of land in section 15, of Jefferson Township, but sold it isn 1911. For several years, Mr. Wycoff owned and operated a threshing machine and did a large business in this and Audubon County for many years. Mr. Wycoff was married June 28, 1899 to Bessie M. SPICKLER, who was born in Tama County, Iowa, September 17, 1879, daughter of Calvin and Elizabeth (TRAVIS) SPICKLER. Calvin Spickler was born in Ogle County, Illinois, while his wife was a native of Maryland, daughter of George and Catherine (CLINE) TRAVIS. The Travis family moved from Maryland to Illinois when Elizabeth was a very small girl. Calvin Spickler was the son of Nicholas Spickler and wife. Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Spickler were the parents of three children, Bessie, the wife of Mr. Wycoff, Marcia and Charles. Mr. and Mrs. Wycoff are the parents of six children, four of whom are living: Gladys, born July 9, 1901; Gordon L., born September 28, 1902; Norine, born March 14, 1909, and Virginia E., born June 13, 1912. The other two children were twins and died in infancy. Mr. Wycoff carries on a general system of farming and stock raising, making a specialty of hog raising. In 1913 he had fifteen head of horses and colts on his farm, all of a high class breed. Mr. Wycoff is an independent in politics, believing that he is serving his country's interest best if he votes for the best men, irrespective of their politics. For this reason, he is regarded as one of the influential citizens of his township and county. For the past year or more, he has been a school director of his home township, in which capacity he has rendered efficient service to his fellow citizens. He has been successful as a farmer and has always dealt fairly with his fellow men, and is eminently deserving of what he has achieved in the way of material success.

Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/zk.2ADI/2126.1 Message Board Post: 1915 PAST AND PRESENT OF SHELBY COUNTY IOWA by EDWARD S. WHITE, B. A., LL. B. B. F. BOWEN & COMPANY, Inc. Indianapolis, Indiana pages 801-803 CALVIN B. SPICKLER. It is undoubtedly true that there are many men in this country who are as able to hold high official positions or occupy places of trust as those who have filled these positions. Undoubtedly there are hundreds of men who would make efficient governors and state officials, or town officials and no one questions but that there are plenty of men who might have been more efficient presidents than the men who defeated them. No one would say that Daniel Webster would not have made a more efficient President than Martin Van Buren. Whenever the occasion arises there are always men to meet it; Grant would never have been heard of if the Civil war had not brought him into prominence. He would have died as he was living at the time the war broke out, a poor laboring man. A man who arises above his fellows does so because he has found out how to rise above his surroundings, together with the fact that a simple opportunity presents itself. Many men work for years before they ca! n attain in any way their life's ambition and many of our successful farmers of today worked from twelve to twenty-five and even more years before they have finally acquired a farm of their own. Among the farmers of Shelby county who have worked hard for all they possess today, there is no one more worthy of mention for the honorable life he has led than Calvin B. Spickler, a prosperous farmer of Jefferson township in this county. Calvin B. Spickler was born in Oakland, Cole county, Illinois, on March 2, 1854, and is the son of Nicholas and Mary (Stephen) Spickler, his father being a native of Maryland. The mother died when Calvin B. Spickler was an infant and consequently her family history has been lost to him. Mr. Spickler married again and by the two marriages was the father of fourteen children, five by the first marriage and nine by the second marriage. The five children by the first marriage are John H., Mrs. Clara Donelson (de-ceased), Mrs. Elmira Snider (deceased), Calvin B. and Mrs.. Mary E. Snyder. Calvin B. Spickler was only about two years of age when his father moved from Illinois to Iowa. He was given a common school education and assisted his father on the home farm until he was twenty-one years old. He then worked by the month for four years, after which he married and commenced farming for himself on rented land. The first year he rented seventy acres, and the second year eighty acres. The third year of his married life he came to Shelby county, where he purchased eighty acres in Jefferson township, on which he lived for the next two years. He then made several changes in the township and in 1895 moved to Arkansas, but stayed only about ten weeks. Life in Arkansas was not what it had been pictured to him and he was glad to get back to Shelby county. He at once purchased one hundred and sixty acres in section 21 of Jefferson township, where he is now living. He carries on general farming and stock raising, making a specialty of Poland-China hogs. Within the last few years he has become interested in the raising of much cows for dairy purposes and now keeps from twelve to fifteen milch cows on hand all the time. He has found the dairy business a profitable venture and has had good success since branching out into this line. Mr. Spickler was married on December 10, 1878, to Elizabeth Traverse, who was born on February 10, 1857, in Maryland, near Hagerstown. She is the daughter of George and Catherine (Cline) Traverse. Her father was a native of Pennsylvania and her mother of Maryland. Mr. and Mrs. Traverse are the parents of eleven children, Mrs. Mary Brown, Mrs. Emaline Ambrose, Mrs. Amy Everly, Mrs. Jane Pope, William and Frank and five who died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Spickler have three children: Bessie M., the wife of L. E. Wycoff and the mother of six children, four of whom are living, Gladys, Gordon, Norine and Virginia; Marcia and Charles H., who are both under the parental roof. Mr. Spickler has been a stanch Democrat the most of his life, although he has never hesitated to deviate from the path of party regularity whenever he felt that the best interests of his community were being better served. He prefers to be classed as an independent voter rather than as a partisan. He has never held office and has never been an aspirant for one, preferring to devote his time to his home interests and farm. Religiously, Mrs. Spickler is a member of the United Brethren church, while Mr. Spickler has never formally identified himself with this denomination, yet he takes an interest in church work and contributes to its support. In 1910 Mr. Spickler moved to Irwin for a year, after which he moved back to a farm three-quarters of a mile east of where he is now living. He has been living upon his old farm continuously since 1912. Mr. Spickler can now see the results of his hard labor for many years. His early dreams have been in a measure realized. He! had no desire to become a wealthy man merely but did wish to secure such a competence as would insure him and his family comfort in their declining years. This he has attained and he also has the satisfaction that while attaining it he has never fallen below the true dignity of manhood. His life has been free from those faults which might bring down the censure of his neighbors upon him. He has never neglected an opportunity to assist in the improvement of his community, socially, morally or intellectually, and for this reason he has always had the good will and esteem of his friends and acquaintances.

I've "rescued" an old photograph of Carry MCDOWELL which was taken at the Heintz Studio in Harlan, Iowa. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with Carry likely in his 20's at the time it was taken. I'm hoping to locate someone from Carry's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to its rightful place, with family. If you are a member of his family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
