She was raised in Panama, Defiance, and Manilla, Iowa. Following graduation from Manilla High School, Mary attended business school in Omaha, Nebraska, for a year. She then worked for several years in the Myrtue Memorial Hospital Medical Records department. On November 5, 1955, she married Donald Dean Poole in Manilla, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm southeast of Harlan. Mary was a homemaker, raising their four children and helping Don on the farm. In 1996, Mary and Don retired to their home in Harlan. Mary was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa, where she had served as the St. Anne’s Guild president. She loved to garden, raising flowers and produce for the family. Mary enjoyed playing Five Hundred and Pitch, dancing, and putting together jigsaw puzzles. Mary M. Poole died on Tuesday, February 28, 2006, at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 71 years and 5 days. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Ann Conway; and one brother, Tony Schiltz. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Donald Poole of Harlan, Iowa; two sons, Douglas Poole of Treynor, Iowa, and Mark Poole of Harlan, Iowa; two daughters, Jean (Mike) Valenta of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Kathryn (Robert) Sopher of Le Mars, Iowa; four sisters, Carolyn (Gene) Denning of Neola, Iowa, Theresa (Bob) Wilson of Kaufman, Texas, Hermie Tank of Manning, Iowa, and Laurina (Dwayne) Schleisman of Omaha, Nebraska; two brothers, Joe (Arlene) Schiltz of Manilla, Iowa, and Mike (Marilyn) Schiltz of Bancroft, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Benita Schiltz of Earling, Iowa; six grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, March 3, 2006, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Father Robert Hoefler celebrating. Musicians were John Rosman and Maryalyce Dotzler. Casket bearers Bill Wingert, Martin Zaccone, Ray Chipman, Richard Lee, Virgil Koppold, and Gary Hopp. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of the arrangements.

Donna passed away March 2, 2006 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, NE following a long illness. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her father in May of 1978 and a granddaughter, Cheyenne Rogers (daughter of Donita) in November of 1995. Lucille was for many years a volunteer at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, a member of Royal Neighbors and the Red Cross. She and Mick farmed in Crescent, Iowa, where she was a member of Hazel Dell Methodist Church. After retiring to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1988, Lucille volunteered in the gift shop of the John C. Lincoln Hospital, Deer Valley. She was an avid reader, cook, and book collector. She leaves to mourn her passing two daughters, Marcia Sarratt Kilbane and Mona Sarratt Knight of Phoenix; grandchildren, Megan Fairchild, and husband, Kirk, of Phoenix and Jason Knight of Denver, Colo.; also greatgrandaughter, McKenna Pierce of Phoenix; sister, Alice Baker Kline of Council Bluffs; brother, Dean Baker and wife, Arlene, of El Sobrante, Calif.; and many friends. Lawrence Malone of Schleswig was pronounced dead at the scene while his passenger, 28-year-old Kelly Wood of Arion, was taken to Manning Hospital and later transported by air ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines with serious injuries. The incident occurred just after 1 p.m. Malone was southbound on M55 when he came upon the intersection with Highway 141 and stopped at a posted stop sign. As he was turning east onto Highway 141, Malone failed to yield and his Ford Taurus was struck by a westbound semi, driven by 39-year-old Bryan Hollander of Denison. Malone was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Dennis Crabb, Crawford County Medical Examiner. Hollander sustained no injuries in the incident. The collision remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa Department of Motor Vehicle Enforcement and the Crawford County Sheriff's Office. = = = = = = = = = = Arion man listed as critical after Tuesday wreck ©Daily Nonpareil - Tom McMahon 02/23/2006 DES MOINES - An Arion man injured in a Tuesday traffic accident is in critical condition, according to a Des Moines Mercy Hospital spokesperson. Kelly Wood, 28, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Lawrence Malone, 24, of Schleswig. Malone died in the accident. According to the Iowa State Patrol, Malone failed to yield at a stop sign at the M55-Highway 141 intersection near Manilla. The patrol said a semi, driven by Bryan Hollander of Denison, struck Malone's car. = = = = = = = = = = Collision kills 24-year-old Schleswig man ©Daily Nonpareil 02/24/2006 A 24-year-old Schleswig man, Lawrence L. Malone, was killed in a car/semi accident at 1:02 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of U.S. Highway 141 and Crawford County road M-55, one mile northwest of Manilla. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Funeral Home. Malone is survived by his parents, four brothers, four sisters, two grandparents and a great-grandmother. Malone was driving a 1989 Ford Taurus southbound on M-55 when he came to the intersection of M-55 and Highway 141. Bryan R. Hollander, 39 of Denison, was driving a 1998 Peterbilt semi west on Highway 141. According to the Iowa State Patrol, Malone stopped at the posted stop sign on M-55 and then pulled onto Highway 141, making a left turn to go east, and did not yield the right of way to Hollander's semi. Once the collision occurred, the semi pushed both vehicles past the intersection and onto the south shoulder of Highway 141. Malone was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Dennis Crabb, Crawford County Medical Examiner. Kelly G. Wood, 28 of Arion, a passenger in Malone's vehicle, was taken to Manning Regional Healthcare Center and then Life Flighted to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines with serious injuries. Hollander was looked at by medical personnel at the scene and released. The collision remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol. Assisting with the investigation is the Iowa Department of Motor Vehicle Enforcement and the Crawford County Sheriff's Office.

She died Monday, February 6, 2006 in Walhalla, South Carolina at the age of seventy-one. She was born in Panama, Iowa and received her education at St. Marys Catholic School, graduating with the class of 1953. On January 20, 1954, Dorothy was united in marriage to Urban Katzer at St. Marys Catholic Church in Panama. The couple settled on the home farm and were blessed with the birth of four children. Dorothy worked at Reynolds Clothing in Denison doing alterations, and in her spare time, enjoyed camping, baking bread, sewing, quilting, and various other crafts. She enjoyed socializing with her friends, especially visiting about sewing and quilting projects. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who looked forward to spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Urban in 1998; her son Duane in 1979; and two sisters: Helen and Mildred. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jane Belcher and her husband, Lyle of Walhalla, South Carolina; two sons: Eugene and his wife, Ann of Denison; and Lynn and his wife, Lisa of Buck Grove; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers: Leonard Assmann and his wife, Addis of Hessmer, Louisiana; and Michael Assmann and his wife, Mary Ann of Earling; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 11, 2006 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa. Fr. Edward Murray served as Celebrant of the service. A private inurnment followed the service at St. Joseph Cemetery in Earling, Iowa with prayers offered by Fr. Mike Berner. Jean Cornelius provided the organ accompaniment for the St. Rose of Lima Choir. Altar servers were: Jeremy Baxa, Alec Ruskell and Aubrey Granzen. Serving as Lector was Ann Katzer and gift bearers were Mike and Mary Ann Assmann. A Legion of Mary Rosary was held at 5:30 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Memorial Contributions may be made to the family. Anna K., daughter of Jens and Maria (Zobrist) Kolby, was born September 3, 1918, at Avoca, Iowa. She grew up in the Avoca and Hancock area, graduating from Hancock High School in 1935. Anna was confirmed in the Avoca Lutheran Church. She received her country school teaching certificate following graduation. On September 30, 1936, Anna was united in marriage with John Allen at Papillion, Nebraska. Four children were born to this union. During World War II, Anna worked at the Bomber plant in Omaha and at Boeing in Washington State. For many years Anna was a farm wife while they lived in the Shelby and Avoca area. In 1958 they moved to Irwin and Anna began work as a merchandise buyer for Variety Distributors in Harlan, where she worked until her retirement. In 1963 they moved to Manilla. In 1986 Anna and John celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Anna loved reading, picture puzzles, crossword puzzles, sewing, quilting, fishing, traveling, and cooking for her family. She used her sewing skills to volunteer at the Manilla Manor for many years. Anna and John made many trips to Canada fishing over the years and visited the 48 contiguous states. John died in 1989 and Anna continued to live in their home in Manilla. Anna passed away peacefully on Friday, February 10, 2006, in Omaha, Nebraska following a brief illness. She was 87 years, 5 months, and 7 days of age. Anna was preceded in death by her parents; husband John Allen; son Ronald Allen in 1973; brother Martin Kolby; and sister Erna Chambers. Leabo is a former Harlan and Shelby area resident. She is survived by three sons -- Rev. Willetta was born on August 11, 1919, in Hood River, Ore. She married George Sindt in Maryville, Mo., in 1941 and they raised four children in Shelby and Harlan. Willetta worked at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan. George passed away in 1974. In 1979 she married Jesse Daniel "Dan" Leabo, they resided in The Dalles, Ore., until 2001 when they moved to Kansas. Dan passed away January 17, 2006. Willetta is survived by three sons, Rev. Marion Sindt, of Radcliff, Iowa, John Sindt, of Sandy, Utah, and Robert Sindt, of Overland Park, Kan.; a daughter, Julie Bruderer, of Sandy,Utah; 21 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandaughter. She also leaves her sister and brother-in-law, Elba and Del Grosvenor, formerly of Logan, Iowa, (now Woodbine) as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Now free of pain and infirmity, she is crocheting with the fine thread again. Services will be Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at Mt. Washington Forever Mausoleum Chapel, Independence, Mo. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. followed by Funeral Service at 11 a.m. She will be laid to rest on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Minden, Iowa, beside her first husband, George Timm Sindt.

Funeral services for Chris will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, February 23rd, at the United Methodist Church in Sac City with Rev. Donald Gibson officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home. Visitation is from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 22nd, at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City. Chris was born on October 31, 1984, in Denison, Iowa, the son of Karla Sands and Michael Nowatzke. He was baptized on January 27, 1985, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, IA. He attended Alta Community Grade School through 1991 and transferred to Sac Community Schools, graduating in 2003. He worked in the kitchen at Park View Care Center from age 16 until graduation. He continued is education at Iowa Central Community College. For the past three years Chris worked as assistant manager in the hardware department at Menard’s in Fort Dodge. He loved to spend time with his family and hang out with his friends, messing with his computer, listening to music, and tinkering with his car in his spare time. A very special memory of his was when he went to the Iowa Football games this past fall with the gang. Survivors include his mother and step father, Karla (Sands) and Ron Peters of Sac City; his father Michael Nowatzke of Earling, IA; brothers: Raymond Paul Nowatzke of Sac City and Nathan Peters and wife Jessica and their children, Eli and Ethan of Spirit Lake, IA. Other survivors include his grandparents: Chris and Kathy Sands of Schleswig, IA, and Lester and Kandis Peters of Wall Lake, IA, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jamie Peters; grandparents, Raymond and MaDonna Nowatzke; and his great-grandparents: Kenneth and Alice Shever and Fred and Catherine Sands; great-grandmother, Tollie Peters; and great-great grandmother Kate Ginger.
