Funeral services were held March 25 at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima at Portsmouth with Rev. John Dorton officiating. Casket bearers were Dan Bruck, Mark Herkenrath, Phil Belder, Hassan Malley, J.J. Herkenrath and Michael Johnson. Honorary casket bearers were Patrick Johnson, Keith Bruck and Mohammed Malley. Interment was at the St. Mary's Cemetery at Portsmouth. Helen, the daughter of Matt and Margaret Sonntag Herbst, was born Aug. 25, 1918 in Panama. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Panama. Helen attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Panama. She was united in marriage to Philip Herkenrath Oct. 9, 1935 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Panama and to this union eight children were born. After their marriage, they made their home in Portsmouth where they owned and operated their own business. Besides helping run the business, Helen had a full-time job of running the home and nurturing and raising their children. She enjoyed flowers, gardening and reading. Helen was a true inspiration of how to live life and how to leave it, as all who knew her knows. She will be remembered by those she touched as a devoted sister, loving wife, mother and grandmother. Those roles were her greatest job and achievement in life. She will also be remembered as a loving friend and neighbor to many. She was a long-time resident! of Portsmouth and member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was highly respected in both. Funeral services were held Monday, March 27 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Persia with Pastor Merlene Ostebee presiding. Casket bearers were Andrew Oloff, George Matthiessen, Joel Ruggles, William Oloff, Robert Matthiessen, Wesley Ruggles, Dustin Laver and Kolt Thomas. Interment was at Valley View Cemetery near Persia. Lillie, the daughter of Max and Anna Dreier Martens, was born March 21, 1905 west of Portsmouth in Cass Township of Harrison County. She was the second daughter in a family of five sons and three daughters. Two young brothers died in infancy. In 1910, the family moved two miles north of Persia living first in a log cabin that is now at the Shelby County Museum. In 1915 the family moved into the home they built that is now the Elven Steenbock home. Lillie was baptized May 7, 1905 and confirmed April 11, 1920 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Persia. She attended the Leland's Grove School. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Lillie was united in marriage Nov. 30, 1922 to Peter William Matthiessen at the home of her parents. The couple made their home near Persia. They were the parents of two children, Anna Maxine and Donald. In 1946 they moved to the Shelby area and in March 1952 William died. Lillie moved into Shelby where she lived until February 1988, when she! became a resident of the Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling. Her hands were never idle, as she did crochet and embroidery work on towels and pillowcases. She was a wealth of information, since she had lived so much of history. Besides her husband, Lillie was preceded in death by daughter Anna Maxine Oloff in 2002 and her brothers and sisters Harry, Walter, Raymond, Alice Kilgore and Verna Otto. Survivors include her son Rev. She was born March 17, 1914 in Wiota, the daughter of Peter George and Annie Maggie (Jemming) Freilinger. She attended Atlantic schools through the sixth grade. She was married to Lawrence Herman Dryer on April 23, 1930 in Woonsocket, S. D. The couple had one child that died at birth. Josephine married Harold Edward Johnson Oct. 14, 1933 in Marysville, Mo. There were three children born to the couple. They lived in Atlantic until 1956 when Harold was transferred to Baron, Wis.; then transferred to California, Mo; Carthage, Mo; Dexter, Mo, and moved back to Atlantic in 1968. Her children commented that their mother will be remembered by family and friends for being very loving. She was a co-operative person who always smiled and never complained. She enjoyed craft work and was known for her special calendars. Survivors include her daughter, Mary Chase of Atlantic; her son, Earl Johnson and his wife, Lorraine of Griswold;10 grandchildren, Connie Jones and her husband, Chris, Harold Chase and his wife, Denise, and Larry Chase, all of Atlantic; Mary Johnson and her husband, Lynn of Onawa, Lawonna (Fredericksen) Cable and her husband, Brian, Rose Klinghammer and her husband, Kris of Atlantic, Wendy Bair and her husband, Gene of Hollister, Mo., Doug Johnson and his wife, Janet of Elliott, David Johnson and his wife, Elaine of Atlantic, Mike Johnson and wife, Shanna of Spencer,; 32 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren. Josephine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harold on Dec. 13, 1967; two daughters in infancy; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; her five sisters and threebrothers, Eva Leon, Lizzie Rachel, Mary Smart, Gertie Boggs, Kathryn Webster, Bill Freilinger, August “Gus” Freilinger, and Henry Freilinger, in infancy. A visitation will be held at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic on Thursday, April 6 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Josephine’s funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 7 at Rolands. Pastor Leon Hodges will officiate. The committal service will be in the Atlantic Cemetery in Atlantic. It is now more of a location than a town; there can't be more than 4 or 5 people that live at the actual location. The nearest "active" town is Manilla (pop. 900 or so), about 3 miles to the northeast in Crawford County. The Astor Cemetery is still maintained and is actually located in Shelby County. Sorensen ©Daily Nonpareil 04/02/2006 George A. Sorensen, age 78, formerly of Neola and Missouri Valley, passed away March 31, 2006. George was born January 13, 1928, in Pipestone, Minn., to Herman and Austra Berg Sorensen. He graduated from Bancroft High and Wayne State College. George served in the U.S. Army from 1946-1948. He taught World History and Drivers Ed at Tri-Center School, and was the founding coach of the Football program there. He retired in 1989 after 30 plus years at Tri-Center. George was a member of the Wayne State Football Hall of Fame and an avid golfer, hunter, fisherman, and Nebraska football fan. George was preceded in death by sisters, Helen, Dorothy Erickson, and Karen Palmer; brothers, Francis "Sonny," and Donald; and his parents. Peter J. Fromm,Jr. Peter "Pete" Joseph Fromm, Jr., the son of Peter and Philomena (Gorsche) Fromm, Sr., was born on February 3, 1926, in Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peters Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. In 1935, the Fromm family moved to Defiance, Iowa and Pete attended school and graduated from St. Paul's Catholic School in Defiance. After high school, he stayed on his family's farm to help his father until he was drafted. On September 21, 1950, Peter was inducted into the United States Army at Omaha, Nebraska. He served with the Third Infantry during the Korean conflict. During his military service, Pete was privileged to serve with the Honor Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. He was present for many dignitaries including President Harry S. Truman. His duty was one of honor and respect. He was honorably discharged on September 20, 1952, at Indiantown Cap Military Reservation. On November 16, 1959, he was united in marriage to Therese Kaufman at St.Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: John, Pete and Mary. After their marriage, the couple resided just west of Defiance, Iowa, on the farm that Peter's parents farmed and this has been their home since that time. Pete was a lifetime farmer and enjoyed his work. He was a member of the American Legion Post No, 707 of Defiance, Iowa, and was a past member of the Knights of Columbus. Pete was a big supporter of the Defiance Town Team Baseball and was a player as well as a coach. His life revolved around his family, his farm, his faith and the flag. He was a loving husband, father and very proud grandfather. Peter died on Thursday, March 30, 2006, at his home in Defiance, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty years, one month and twenty-seven days. In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his brother and sisters: Leonard, Marie Beauchamp, Margaret Lehan, and Edna Finken. Michelle was born February 29, 1972, in Council Bluffs to Benjamin and Mary Lou (Rosman) Crowder. Michelle moved with her family to Cheyenne some 20 years ago and was employed at the Salvation Army. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and ARC. Michelle was preceded in death by her grandparents, Myron and Veronica Rosman. She is survived by her parents, Ben and Mary Lou Crowder; brother, David Crowder, all of Cheyenne; and grandparents, Calvin and Helen Crowder of Council Bluffs. Wake Service will be Sunday at 4:00 p.m. with visitation following until 6:00 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be Monday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church with Rev. Chuck Kottas, Pastor, officiating. Thielen-Barna, age 55, of Council Bluffs, passed away peacefully March 30, 2006, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital with her loving husband and children at her side. Phyllis was born in Crawford, Neb., to Warren and Mary Jane (Baltz) Seegrist on August 28, 1950. Phyllis graduated from Crawford High School in 1968 and moved to Council Bluffs in 1970. She worked as a librarian at Glendale Elementary School and later retired in 2003 as a seamstress at Charles Schneider Furniture Co. Phyllis was a member of the Catholic faith and the Bunko Sisterhood for 27 years. She loved horses and animals. Phyllis was preceded in death by her father, Warren Seegrist. She is survived by her husband, Mark Barna, of Council Bluffs; and 3 exceptional sons, Jeff Thielen and wife Kellie, of Council Bluffs, Chad Thielen and girlfriend Cynthia, of Chicago, Ill., and Jeremy Thielen and fiance Heidi Struck, of Blaine, Minn. She was a proud mother who took great pride in their activities and accomplishments. Other survivors include, mother, Mary Jane Sexton of Hot Springs, SD; grandchildren, Austin, Aiden, Alek, Joshua, Reigan, Tracy, Bradley, Andrew, Cody, Courtney, Sabrina, and Diego; brothers, Loren Seegrist and wife Pat, of Hot Springs, SD and Duane "Zeke" Seegrist, of Crawford, Neb.; stepdaughters, Heather Stanbrook and husband Shad and Melissa Dominguez and husband Gilbert, all of Tuscon, Ariz.; and stepson, Chris Barna and wife Tammy, of Omaha. Visitation with the Family will be Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the mortuary with Rev. Dan Kirby officiating. Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Bernard Hansen, of Portsmouth; mother, Ethel Caroline Allerton, of Council Bluffs; daughters, Susan (Andrew) Austin, of Omaha, Neb., Sharon (Kalvin) Petersen and Sandra (Mike) Davis, both of Alta, Iowa; sons, Dean (Lori) Hansen, of Avoca and David (Annette) Hansen, of Muskogee, Okla.; brothers, John (Cherry) Allerton, of Council Bluffs and Keith Allerton, of Omaha, Neb.; 13 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home. Funeral service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, Iowa.
